The lagoon in front of the accommodation is a great place for bird and wildlife spotting making this a unique place to stay.

What is an Eco Lodge?

An eco-lodge is a type of accommodation that emphasizes sustainability and environmental conservation. These lodges are often located in natural settings, and they operate in a manner that minimizes their impact on the environment. This can involve practices such as using renewable energy, waste management, water conservation, sourcing local and organic food, and promoting local employment and culture.

15 Awesome Things to do in Sri Lanka

Hike Little Adams Peak

If you want to enjoy some of the best views in Ella without needing to hike for hours, Little Adam’s Peak is an awesome adventure. It’s best enjoyed during sunrise or sunset and is a must-see in Sri Lanka. It’s one of the top things to do in Sri Lanka if you enjoy hiking!

The trail begins with a moderate incline as it winds through tea plantations. It will lead you up to 1141m above sea level although you already begin at a high elevation so you will only hike up a few hundred meters. There are multiple platforms, rocks, and viewpoints perfect for photos once you hit the top of Little Adam’s Peak.

If you are in Ella and looking to visit Little Adam’s Peak but also want to see Ella Rock and the Famous Nine Arch Bridge, there is a great day tour that packs it all in. It’s extremely good value considering you can tick off all three attractions in just one day for about $55. It is called the Ella Three Icons Day Tour.

Ride the Kandy to Ella Train

The Kandy to Ella train journey is said to be one of the most scenic, epic train journeys in not only just Sri Lanka but the world. So with a few days to spare in Sri Lanka, I decided to purchase a ticket for $1.50 and climb aboard for the 5-hour journey. Yes, the train really does cost just $1.50.

I have now taken the train in both directions. From Kandy to Ella and in reverse from Ella to Kandy. On both occasions, I just arrived at the train station and bought the cheapest ticket and walked on. I didn’t sit in a seat, I preferred to an open door and hang my legs over the edge for the entire journey.

There is another option, which is actually quite useful. You can do a tour where you take the train from Kandy to Ella and do a tea-plantation visit. It includes lunch and they take care of all the ticketing and organization so it’s a pretty relaxing journey. Riding this train was definitely one of my favorite things to do in Sri Lanka.

Trek through a Tea Plantation in Nuwara Eliya

Lipton Tea is a staple item in the cupboard of most families around the world. Never did I expect to be trekking with a 60-yr-old local Sri Lankan up and down the steep mountains home amongst the famous Lipton Tea and other highly lauded tea estates. If you are looking to gain historical context and perspective this is one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka.

There’s this great value tour that visits the Dambatenne Tea Factory, and then heads over to Lipton’s Seat for magnificent views.

Book your tour: Lipton Seat & Dambatenne Tea Factory Day Tour

The Royal Tea Trail begins innocuously by the roadside before beginning to the wind between steep tea terraces. Although unlike the rice terraces in Bali these are not tiered. There are no steps and the tea-pluckers must scale the sharp incline. The tea plants are scattered with no particular pattern although they are often layered creating a beautiful linear design on the side of the mountains. If you only do one guided tour is activity is one of the must-do in Sri Lanka!

Go on Safari in Sri Lanka

It is an unmissable experience to go on a safari while in Sri Lanka. There are many national parks with great experiences including Yala and Kaudulla. I ended up choosing Kaudulla National Park and I was amazed at what we saw. Our group got into an open-top jeep and began cruising through the jungle. Keep your eyes out for elephants, leopards, sloths, turtles, and more amazing wildlife. On my safari, we came across a massive herd of 100+ elephants drinking at a lake. We cruised slowly, letting the elephants go about their business as we watched calves follow their mothers while males were fighting.

It was truly an immersive wildlife experience and one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka for photographers! You can actually do a safari, which is surprisingly affordable with a 3-hour experience but the 2-Day All-Inclusive Safari option allows you to sleep in a luxury accommodation amongst the wilderness with better chances of spotting leopards at dawn and dusk.

Visit Nine Arch Bridge in Ella

The Nine Arch Bridge in Ella is on the Demodara loop and spans 91 meters at a height of 24m. The beautiful nine arches make it a very picturesque spot especially as it is located in a dense jungle and agricultural setting. Behind the railway, a forest is booming, and below, tea leaves are being cultivated.

The bridge was built at Gotuwala between the Ella and Demodara stations during the British Colonial period. Locally it is known as ‘Ahas Namaye Palama’ meaning nine skies bridge in Sinhala. The name derives from the visual experience. When you stand below the bridge and look up you can see the sky through the nine arches.

The unique part about this bridge is that it is built entirely from rocks, bricks, and cement with no use of steel or metals throughout the structure. The bridge was commissioned in 1941 and the story goes that as the bridge was being planned World War I broke out.

There are a number of cafes in the hills with vantage points of the bridge but down at the bridge is where you want to be. The Nine Arch Bridge has a huge bend in it so in my opinion standing on the side the bridge bends away from makes for the best photos and accentuates the arch. Watching a train come around the bend on this bridge was one of my favorite things to do in Sri Lanka.

If you are in Ella and looking to visit Little Adam’s Peak but also want to see Ella Rock and the Famous Nine Arch Bridge, there is a great day-tour that packs it all in. It’s extremely good value considering you can tick off all three attractions in just one day for about $55. It is called the Ella Three Icons Day Tour.

Sunset at the Famous Rope swing in Dalawella

There are plenty of places around the world that have become viral travel hotspots overnight. A few popular Instagrammers or vloggers blow a place up and all of a sudden it becomes a must-do activity while you visit a region. The palm tree rope swing at Dalawella Beach is a prime example of a social media hotspot. Having said that it’s an awesome spot for a fun afternoon or a sunset and chill place to hang out whether you intend on getting that ‘Instagrammable’ travel shot or not.

The location of the swing is on Dalawella Beach, which is in the south of Sri Lanka near the popular town of Unawatuna. It takes about two hours to get to Dalawella Beach by train from Colombo and will cost a couple of bucks for the ticket. Once you are at Dalawella Beach the exact location is actually in front of a guesthouse called Dream Cabana.

The guys at Dream Cabana built the swing as something fun for themselves and it is evolved into one of the most talked-about spots in Sri Lanka. It’s crazy how something a few mates built has become one of the most popular things to do in Sri Lanka.

Surf at Hikkaduwa

The south coast of Sri Lanka is a surfers paradise. Around each corner is a new break being enjoyed by only a handful. A searing sun, the warmest water, and endless waves make the south the perfect surfari destination. What makes it a surfari? No matter where you travel along the coast you are never far from the jungle, monkeys, peacocks, and jungle bliss. There really aren’t too many places in the world that combine both the jungle and surf in such close proximity.

Hike to the top of Diyaluma Falls

Diyaluma Falls is the 2nd biggest waterfall in Sri Lanka and is the perfect spot for a full day adventure. There are multiple falls and natural pools throughout this hike in the Badulla region. I could’ve spent days here.

The hike was almost entirely downhill and led us through the long grass but the trail was marked the whole way. It appeared that the trail wasn’t used too often as the trail was quite overgrown in many parts.

There’s a day tour that runs from Ella and takes you on the hike to Diyaluma Falls that I can recommend below. This was one of the best-unexpected adventures in Sri Lanka during my trip!

Go Hiking in Riverston

Hiking in Riverston Sri Lanka was an unexpected highlight of my journey throughout the island. Riverston is a region best defined by the popular term, ‘off the beaten path’. We drove for several hours, parked in the middle of nowhere, and then embarked on a hike. If you want something unique and to get away from the crowds, this is one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka

The hike doesn’t have a specific name according to the locals other than the Riverston Hike. The hike looks out over the Knuckles mountain range and the surrounding highlands. It’s one of the short day trip hikes in the area. The end of the hike ends with a sharp 300m drop, which made for some pretty epic photos. From here you can chill and take in the views of the Thelgamuwa Valley, the terraced rice fields, and the Knuckles mountain range. This spot is called ‘The Worlds End’. The hike is 5km long but not incredibly difficult.

If you would like to organize a tour there is actually a really cool tour that takes you from Kandy on a hike to see the ‘Knuckles’ at World’s End. The tour takes you along the ridges of the Knuckles mountain range as you enjoy the beautiful views during this full-day adventure that includes pick-up and drop-off from Kandy.

Get a Tattoo in Galle

Getting a tattoo in a developing country is always an interesting experience. In Sri Lanka, there are plenty of different tattoo studios to choose from. I was in Unawatuna in the south of the country and found a tattoo artist called Sajee in the nearby city of Galle.

I visited the studio to meet Sajee and check out some of his work. The studio wasn’t spotless but it was fairly clean and the photos of his previous work filled me with confidence.  A few hours later I had a tiger on my arm. You might call it risky but this was one of my best memories and one of the epic things to do in Sri Lanka that I definitely don’t regret!

Explore the Markets

There are markets all over Sri Lanka, all of which will be great to explore. Try new fruits, taste some local dishes and of course meet the local vendors. I visited a small market in Nuwara Eliya and met some beautiful grocers and vendors who loved having their portraits taken as I wandered throughout the stalls.

Hike to the Top of Pidurangala Rock

While Sigiriya Rock is rich in history and has some pretty dramatic features such as the lion’s paw and the mirror wall, Pidurangala Rock has a much more natural feel, despite also housing a temple.

Pidurangala Rock is adjacent to Sigiriya Rock and is the best viewing spot of Sigiriya Rock as it is only slightly lower. Pidurangala is a popular spot for sunrise as you can enjoy 360-degree views of not only the valleys but also Sigiriya Rock.

There is no need to choose between the two. Many travelers wake up for the sunrise at Pidurangala and then head to sunset on top of Sigiriya Rock. This is exactly what I did and I highly recommend it.

Climb Sigiriya Rock

Sigiriya Rock is referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. It is a truly astonishing feat of architecture. The fortress at the top has been subjected to many wars and invasions, making this a very historic site. It’s one of the most popular tourist things to do in Sri Lanka.

370 meters above sea level and 200 meters higher than the jungle below is the top of Sigiriya Rock. The fortress is comprised of abandoned palaces, ponds, waterways, canals, stairs, and walls. We climbed all the way to the top for sunset and witnessed Sri Lanka’s most popular site during one of the best sunsets of the year.

If you are in Colombo, there’s a great full-day tour including climbing to the top of Sigiriya Rock that you should definitely check out at the link below.

A road trip along the South Coast

From Unawatuna to Mirissa to Tangalle, the south coast of Sri Lanka is perfect for a road trip. You can grab a bike and cruise your way through each town stopping for a surf or a coffee at every new beach. Palm trees and epic beaches line the coast. There are so many awesome, tropical beaches along this coastline that it gets repetitive in a good way. So grab a bike hit the road and enjoy one of the top things to do in Sri Lanka!

Explore Colombo City

After all of your adventurous travels throughout Sri Lanka, a night in a hotel might be warranted in Colombo. During my trip with the tourism board, we were lucky enough to stay at the Movenpick Colombo, which had an infinity pool looking out over the city to the ocean. It was a perfect spot for sunset. Whether you like it or not, your trip is likely to begin or end in Colombo as that is where the airport is. Exploring the city with a tour or hanging out at the hotels is one of the relaxing things to do in Sri Lanka after your big adventure!

One of the best ways to see Colombo is on this top-rated half-day tour of Colombo City with an English-speaking guide who knows all of the best spots and places to eat.

It’s fast become of the top things to do in Sri Lanka.

DALAWELLA BEACH PALM TREE ROPE SWING

The location of the swing is on Dalawella Beach, which is in the south of Sri Lanka near the popular town of Unawatuna. It takes about two hours to get to Dalawella Beach by train from Colombo and will cost a couple of bucks for the ticket. Once you are at Dalawella Beach the exact location is actually in front of a guesthouse called Dream Cabana.

The guys at Dream Cabana built the swing as something fun for themselves and it is evolved into one of the most talked-about spots in Sri Lanka. It’s crazy how something a few mates built has become a bucket list item in Sri Lanka.

I went in March of 2017 and came back again to the swing on this trip in October of 2017. In March, there was no fee to swing but they suggested this time we should pay 500 rupees. I’m not sure whether they will keep this fee but we suggested they sell drinks and turn it into a chill spot because people would be more than willing to buy a beer or a snack in exchange for a swing session and that would create good vibes all around.

Either way, expect that you might have to pay a few bucks either for something to eat or to contribute to the swing, it’s maintenance, and the creators of the swing. Since March, they have added another rope reinforcing the palm.

I have personally taken photos at the Insta-famous palm tree rope swing in Dalawella Beach during the middle of the day and at sunset. Both times of the day are great for photography. The sunsets a little to the left of the swing if you shoot side on, which is perfect for some awesome sunset beach vibes.

If you do head to the swing, have a chat with the owners who are sitting in their hut, buy a drink or just be respectful in general as this is not a public activity. Or I’m sure if you stay at Dream Cabana you will have unlimited swings throughout your stay.

Things to know when packing for Sri Lanka

There are a few key factors that make Sri Lanka different from other countries and therefore make your packing list different are the following:

  • Humidity: Sri Lanka can be sticky, sweaty, and a bit awkward at times. Waterproof dry bags, phone covers, insect repellents, and other measures need to be taken into account.
  • Rain: Sri Lanka can be boiling hot one minute and pouring with rain the next. You can still have an awesome time but a waterproof jacket that isn’t too thick is key.
  • Water: There are a lot of waterfalls and island hopping activities so a GoPro or waterproof camera can be a really fun tech toy to help record your adventures.

Let me begin with a list of must-have items to pack for your trip to Sri Lanka. Not everyone has the same itinerary or the same intentions while traveling, but hopefully, everyone can find some use for this Sri Lanka packing list. I’ll include a comprehensive packing checklist at the end so you don’t forget any essentials for your Sri Lanka adventure.

Grayl GeoPress Water Filter

This item is first on the list because it’s a literal lifesaver. Stomach bugs are an unfortunate part of Sri Lanka travel and one that many people experience. Yes, you need clean water, but pretending to be an earthy boho traveler while buying multiple plastic water bottles a day is pretty crass.

I’ve been using this Grayl filter for the past few years in the most remote places in the world, and have never gotten sick. In one press and less than 8 seconds, you have pure, filtered water that goes wherever you go. A pretty awesome thing, if you ask me.

Waterproof Phone Case

Whether you’re by the beach or tip-toeing behind the enormous waterfalls of Sri Lanka, it’s a wise investment to get yourself a waterproof phone cover. Not only do they keep your phone safe from water damage, but you’ll be able to take photos too.

A cheap phone pouch like this will do the job. However, if you want to turn your phone into an underwater camera rig, this Axis-GO will be your best bet.

Power Bank

This is another item I always travel with. Carrying a power bank is especially helpful in places that occasionally experience power outages, or in countries with different power outlets to your own. I sometimes can’t be bothered to find my travel adapter and charge directly from my power bank. However, you can only top up indiscriminately if your power bank has a massive capacity like this one.

Anker Power Bank

  • 92 hours of extra phone battery

Lightweight Rain Jacket

First up is a rain jacket, which is always in my adventure backpack. From late-night moped rides to protection from torrential downpours and waterfall spray, you’ll be happy to have one of these in your bag. They’re also useful as an extra layer for hikes like Little Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka. Find a great option here.

Selfie Stick

There are few accessories for the GoPro more important than the selfie stick. First off, don’t be ashamed of using a selfie stick. They capture some of the best and most engaging angles.

I personally use the Sandmarc GoPro Pole. It’s longer than the name-brand GoPro stick and is a simple telescoping pole. It’s a robust accessory for getting the shot and should be included in any aspiring content creator’s kit.

LOOC MARINE SANCTUARY, LOOC BAY

Travel Adapter

The next few items on the list are all electronics to simplify your travels, starting with the travel adapter. A few newer hotels will have universal outlets, but for the most part, this is an essential item.

This universal travel adapter features 2 USB outlets as well as a universal plug. Essentially, you can charge 3 devices at a time, in up to 150 countries. That’s a pretty great deal for a couple of bucks.

Insect Repellent

Prevention is far better than finding a cure, especially in a place like Sri Lanka. The pesky tropical mosquitos love to hang around same places you do, around palm trees, lagoons, villa pools and pretty much anywhere else you’ll find water. They also carry the risk of Dengue fever, which is a great way to ruin your vacation. Pack a DEET-free mosquito repellant to safely prevent bites. If you prefer an option with DEET, this is a great alternative.

Underwater Camera

Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to bring an action camera. Whether you’re learning to surf, visiting the raging waterfalls, having an underwater camera on hand is a great call. For this, the GoPro Hero 12 is my top recommendation. With HyperSmooth available in slow motion and ultra-high definition, dull, shaky footage is a thing of the past.

Water Shoes

You’re probably starting to realize there is a bit of a reoccurring theme here. Water-related adventures can be found all around Sri Lanka and so can a lot of sharp, slippery surfaces too. Water shoes are a great way to explore Sri Lanka without cutting up your feet on the volcanic rock that often accompanies its white sandy beaches. They can also protect your feet against hot, midday sand, provide traction on muddy waterfall trails, and protect your feet from sea urchin stings and accidental coral abrasions. These Xero Water Shoes tick all the boxes, with these NRS Water Shoes offering a slightly more cost-effective option.

Passport Wallet

I’ve had multiple friends lose track of their passports, forgetting them here or there or leaving them behind on a random island. I’ve never had that problem because I’ve always used a passport wallet. They protect your passport from damage and spills, and it’s great to have your spare cards and vaccine record all in one place. I like to store this separately from my other things just in case.

Money Belt

The money belt is the cooler little brother to the ’90s fanny pack. This one is made of satin so it slips seamlessly under a shirt and stays cool. It includes 2 zippered pockets and an adjustable waistband, and of course, peace of mind.

Dry Bag

If you’re traveling to Sri Lanka in the rainy season, this could be simple insurance against a waterlogged camera. A sturdy dry bag with backpack straps is also great for keeping your electronics safe on waterfall hikes or boat tours. Meanwhile, this EarthPak dry bag provides a more budget-friendly option and is all most travelers need.

Backpacking Bag

To start, my go-to way to travel is a solid backpacking bag, like this. I live out of my bag, so the 75L capacity is great for me. For you, it might mean you can overpack to your heart’s content. If your trip to Sri Lanka includes backpacking through Southeast Asia, however, this might be the perfect size for you.

Perks of this bag include 2 separate zippered access points to the main compartment, plus top draw-string access, and plenty of zippered pockets, clip-on points, and water bottle holders. It also includes a very lightweight day pack that’s served me well on many an adventure.

Travel Day Pack

As mentioned above, a day pack is an essential part of the Sri Lanka traveler’s kit. You can carry your camera, food, and water on an adventure day, or safely carry your laptop to your co-working space on the back of a moped. This backpack is also the perfect carry-on size for your flight into Sri Lanka, and can comfortably fit your laptop, electronics, toiletries, and a change of clothes.

Packing Cubes

Even if you’re not living out of your backpack, using packing cubes is a major travel hack. You can separate your gym clothes from your nicer outfits, keep your swimwear separate, or if you’re really kooky, color coordinate everything. It’s the closest thing to traveling with a wardrobe, and for me, a must-have item on the Sri Lanka packing list.

Reusable Water Bottle

Now the Grayl also stores the water you’ve just purified, but if you won’t have access to flowing water for a bit, or just like to keep your cool beverages cold, this vacuum-insulated Hydroflask is a great idea. I like to carry a liter of water with me for most adventures, so the 32oz option is great to pack for Sri Lanka.

Travel Towel

Even if you’re planning to stay at a resort with unlimited beach towels, it’s handy to bring your own travel towel. To start, they take up very little space for how useful they are. They fold much smaller than regular towels, meaning you’re more likely to throw one in your bag for an adventure day.

Also, they’re extremely versatile. Take one to a yoga class, the outdoor gym, or to dry off after a jump in a mountain waterfall. These travel towels come in a handful of colors and prints.

Anti Diarrhea Tablets

Despite your best efforts, this is an item you may unfortunately need. Diarrhea in Sri Lanka is an inevitable truth, so the best thing you can do is to prepare. These tablets work quickly and effectively so your bad stomach days take up as little of your time in Sri Lanka as possible.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Sri Lanka is one of the most ecologically important marine environments in the world, meaning we as tourists should visit as responsibly as possible. This Raw Elements sunblock is reef-safe and non-nano Zinc Oxide, making it safe for you and the coral. It also stays put for up to 80 minutes in the water, making it economical as well.

Quick-Dry Shorts

Whether you’re getting in the ocean, a waterfall, or getting caught in the rain, not having to worry about damp and stinky clothes is huge. Plus for minimalists like me, being able to pack a pair of shorts that triple as sportswear, swimwear, and loungewear is pretty great.

Hemp T-Shirt

With the hot and humid Sri Lanka weather, a few comfy t-shirts should be staples in your wardrobe. These hemp blend t-shirts go above and beyond by boasting UPF 30 sun protection and anti-odor properties. As a bonus, they’re also modest enough to wear while visiting temples.

Warm Hoody

Too often, people pack for a tropical vacation and are completely blindsided when freezing on a rainy day, in the mountains, or even during the cold plane ride over. If you’re planning to hike any mountains in Sri Lanka, definitely pack warm layers. Even driving around in the evenings can be much more pleasant with a warm hoody in your pack.

Sarong

As mentioned earlier, a sarong is necessary to enter many Sri Lanka sights temples. For ladies, carrying one that doubles as a wrap skirt or beach cover-up is useful. For guys, a sarong can double as a beach blanket or extra layer, and you can choose your own over a local temple rental.

Multi-Purpose Shoes

I said it before, but I’m a minimalist, and these Teva sandals are a traveler’s dream. They’re comfortable and non-dorky casual wear. These are designed to be used as water shoes, and also tackle hikes extremely well. They’ll certainly tick all the boxes and leave room for more items in the Sri Lanka packing list.

P.S Don’t forget to wear a helmet on the moped.

I thought I would also add the camera gear I travel with to this post for all photographers out there who want to capture their epic adventures in Sri Lanka.

Sony A7ii Mirrorless Camera

I wanted a light camera, one that I would be able to carry on hikes and all of my travel adventures. The Sony A7 series does a great job at competing and often outperforming Canon and Nikon but in a smaller camera. Mirrorless is the way of the future for cameras and for travel bloggers it is a no-brainer to go for a mirrorless camera as they are sometimes half the size. A great part about the Sony A7II is being able to use the Sony PlayMemories Apps. There are lots of free apps you can install on the camera such as the Time Lapse app and Sky HDR app. The Sony A7iii is now available, which means the Sony A7ii has been reduced dramatically in price to less than $1000.

IJEN CRATER TREK AND THE BLUE FLAME IN EAST JAVA

16-35 f4 Sony Landscape Photography Lens

The Sony 16-35mm Vario-Tessar F4 Lens is on my camera 90% of the time. It is my go-to lens for my Instagram, blog and just about everything. The focal length of 35mm is equivalent to what you see with a naked eye. A focal length of 16mm is much wider and enabled me to capture an entire scene, a vast range of mountains or an entire beach in one shot. The Sony 16-35mm is my primary lens and It enabled me to shoot some portraits but also the flexibility to fit an entire landscape into my frame. It’s perfect for travel photography, especially if you are in nature a lot.

55mm f1.8 Sony- Zeiss Portrait Lens

A prime lens has a fixed focal length and a much wider aperture, which enables low light shooting and a much smaller depth of field. I purchased the Sony 55mm F1.8 Sonnar T FE ZA Prime Lens. I ended up doing a few paid jobs and paying off this lens quickly. My favorite time with this lens was in Indonesia where I tried my hand at travel portrait photography for the first time, which turned out to be really fun especially with the small depth of field the Sony 55m F1.8 delivered. Taking portraits is something I do now in every country I visit and it is because of this lens.

Hoya Polarizer Filter

All of my landscape photos involved the sun and often the ocean. The harsh light from the sun often blows out the water with awful reflections. I bought a Hoya 72mm HRT Circular PL Polarizer and with a small twist before taking a photo I was now able to reduce or eliminate the reflections on the ocean. All of a sudden I could see the reef below the water and bring out the turquoise color of the Pacific Ocean. Even on hikes the polarizer really brings out the greens of the trees and is so handy when shooting a waterfall. My polarizer is on my camera 90% of the time and is one of my favorite accessories. It also protects your expensive lens glass from scratches.

Dji Mavic 2 Drone

Buying a drone is the single best thing I’ve done during my travels. I absolutely love flying my drone at all of the amazing places I get to visit. The Dji Mavic Pro 2 is super compact and fits in my backpack quite easily. I love the idea that I get to have an aerial tour of each location I visit. It is like a free helicopter experience all around the world. The drone allows me to really show the landscape of a location to my blog readers in a way that a regular camera just can’t capture. I love getting to the top of a mountain on a solo hike, chilling out for a bit and then sending the drone up for an aerial view.

cresta de gallo island

Hoya ND Filter

I began looking the work of many talented landscape photographers and decided I wanted to try my hand at long exposures. I did hours of research and finally decided to get a Hoya Pro 72mm 1000x Neutral Density Filter, which is a 10 stop ND filter. This allowed me to smooth oceans, waterfalls and show motion in the water. It also helped to show motion in the sky especially with cloud movement and during sunset/sunrise.

GorillaPod

I quickly figured out that carrying a tripod everywhere was not fun at all. In fact, I often left it at the hostel because I didn’t want to hike with it. So when I did need a tripod I didn’t even have one. I decided to buy myself a GorillaPod, which is super small, lightweight and fits inside my backpack easily. It is bendable and you can attach it to almost anything. Unlike the tripod, which has a maximum height, you can attach the camera to poles, tree branches or street signs to grab a steady shot. It’s perfect for vlogging and setting up photos of yourself if no-one else is around.

Memory Cards

I have two SanDisk Extreme PRO SD cards, which has worked perfectly for me. They come in different storage amounts but the 64gb or 128gb means you will literally never run out unless you are shooting insane amounts of video.

THREE TOURS I RECOMMEND IN SRI LANKA

Before we get into the list of the top things to do in Sri Lanka, I wanted to share with you three of my favorite tours in Sri Lanka.

Golden Hour Safari: The most popular safari tour is the Golden Hour Safari Experience in Yala National Park

Whale Watching: The Morning Whale Watching Tour from Mirissa Beach is one of the most popular activities in the entire country. See a variety of animals including blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins from the observation deck.

Sigiriya Rock Tour: Discover the Sigirya rock fortress on a 2-3-hour walking trip which will provide an insight into the art, tradition, and history of Sri Lanka. Book your tour: Sigiriya Rock Climb Guided Tour

Ella is a hiking hotspot in the mountain country of Sri Lanka. Some of the views from hikes in Ella are phenomenal with the region well known for its tea plantations and spectacular mountain ranges. If you want to enjoy some of the best views without needing to hike for hours, Little Adam’s Peak Hike is the perfect trek, especially for an unforgettable sunset.

How to get to Little Adam’s Peak from Ella

From the main strip in Ella, you can walk about 1.5kms to the start of the trail. The trailhead is right next to Ella Flower Garden Resort. We parked our car out the front of the resort/restaurant and hit the trail. The map below shows you the location of Little Adam’s Peak (also known as Mini Adam’s Peak) but you can also see where the trail hits the main road (the Flower Garden). An alternative entrance is also located at 98 acres resort and marked by a white Buddha. We went for sunset and only needed about an hour to reach the summit and we were super slow with all of our photos. Coming back down after sunset, we were the last to exit and it was quite dark. Worth it though and easily one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka!

Little Adam’s Peak Hike Entrance Fee

There was no entrance fee for Little Adam’s Peak hike, which was awesome!

Little Adam’s Peak Guided Tour (Includes Ella Rock & Nine Arch Bridge)

If you are in Ella and looking to visit Little Adam’s Peak but also want to see Ella Rock and the Famous Nine Arch Bridge, there is a great day-tour that packs it all in. It’s extremely good value considering you can tick off all three attractions in just one day for about $70. It is called the Ella Three Icons Day Tour.

Little Adam’s Peak Map

Below you will find a map showing how to get to the trailhead for Little Adam’s Peak.

Little Adam’s Peak Hike

The trail begins with a moderate incline as it winds through tea plantations. We passed several ladies with wide smiles who were finishing up work for the day. There are some great photo opportunities early on in the hike if you keep your eyes open!

The trail will lead you up to 1141m above sea level although you already begin at a high elevation so you will only hike up a few hundred meters. The trail is marked the whole way with well-maintained paths and stairs to the first set of viewpoints. As you can see below there are multiple platforms, rocks, and viewpoints perfect for photos once you hit the top of Little Adam’s Peak. Although, you can and should keep going along the ridge and the view only gets better.

Little Adam’s Peak Sunset

As you continue along the ridge the trail gets a little wilder and you might get a little dirty, managing your way up and down to the final viewpoint. I had my friends run ahead so I could shoot them on my 200mm, which resulted in some epic shots with the mountains looming in the background.

Once I caught up with them we all hung out at the top of Little Adam’s Peak with no one else around, taking in the mountains and the epic scenery of the 360-degree views. We probably waited a little too long to head back and ended up trekking back down in the dark.

For just a short hike, Little Adam’s Peak gives you unbelievable views and is the ideal way to spend sunset in Ella.

What are my favorite pieces of hiking gear?

There are four pieces of gear that I simply never forget when I go on a hike. These are four items that I using right now and this list gets updated every year! Here are my hiking essentials.

  • Arcteryx BETA AR Rain Jacket: This is my go-to rain jacket. It’s super light, folds down into a tiny ball, and protects brilliantly in a storm. This one never leaves my backpack.
  • Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Hiking Boots: For the best ankle support, waterproofing, and durable exterior I’m a fan of tough but light hiking boots like these Salomons for my adventures.
  • Black Diamond Head Torch: I can’t tell you how many times, I’ve arrived back from a hike unexpectedly late. I always keep this lightweight but strong headtorch in my bag for the unexpected.
  • Darn Tough Socks: These are the most comfortable hiking socks I’ve ever worn and last for years. They also have a lifetime warranty and you just send them in with a hole and they replace it no questions asked.

Lipton Tea is a staple item in the cupboard of most families around the world. Never did I expect to be trekking with a 60-yr-old local Sri Lankan up and down the steep mountains home amongst the famous Lipton Tea and other highly lauded tea estates. This is my blog review of my experience trekking through one of the famous Sri Lankan tea plantations.

BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT TEA PLANTATIONS IN SRI LANKA

Here is a little history about how tea became one of the biggest products of the trade for Sri Lanka.

During the British Colonization, the tea was introduced in 1824 and planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens. Almost 20 years later commercial tea planting began in Kandy. Nowadays there are multiple regions with large tea estates, taking advantage of the humidity, cool temperatures, and consistently high levels of rainfall. Today Sri Lanka is lauded as the producer of the world’s finest black tea and visiting this region is a must-do activity in Sri Lanka.

BOOKING A GUIDED TOUR OF THE TEA PLANTATION

There are two great tours of the tea plantations. The first is like my tour and includes a 4-5 hour walk through the tea plantations before visiting the factory where it’s all made. This tour includes a picnic lunch and an English-speaking guide.

The second tour is a great value tour that visits the Dambatenne Tea Factory, and then heads over to Lipton’s Seat for magnificent views

MY TREK THROUGH A TEA PLANTATION IN SRI LANKA

At mid-morning I met my local guide, Upali, who was 60 years young and wore a constant smile. From the moment I met Upali, I knew this 14-kilometer trek was going to be as much about the views and tea plantations as it was about the smiling grandfather who was guiding our journey.

Often locals in cities and villages around the world shy away from the camera or despise its presence. However, in Sri Lanka, I have often experienced a desire to be photographed by many strangers. Upali and I passed by a group of women who were busy picking leaves and throwing them over their shoulders into their sacks.

The women motioned to my camera and asked me to photograph them, making Upali promise to show them the photos later. Many of the women took quite a serious upright pose but began laughing as their friends teased them. It was when they broke away from this serious character I could truly capture the beauty of charisma of these beautiful women working in the tea estates.

Upali explained how the women pluck the leaves and the men cut the wooden branches with an incredibly sharp knife. They only get one chance at producing a clean cut to make sure the plant grows back for a second harvest each month.

Often I travel without a guide, enjoying the views but missing out on the local knowledge that is invaluable to understanding key elements of a location or a region. Upali enjoyed explaining to me not only about the tea plantations but about his family, the eagles, the region, and Sri Lanka in general.

tea trails, sri lanka tea, tea estate, tea plantation sri lanka, tea trails sri lanka, trail sri lanka, sri lanka tea plantation, sri lankan tea, tea plantation in sri lanka, hiking in sri lanka, tea ella, tea estate sri lanka, sri lanka hiking

The trail winds through several tea plantations before giving a view across the valley to the Lipton Tea Estate and the Lipton Chair. It was at this moment I realized what an amazing experience this truly was.

tea trails, sri lanka tea, tea estate, tea plantation sri lanka, tea trails sri lanka, trail sri lanka, sri lanka tea plantation, sri lankan tea, tea plantation in sri lanka, hiking in sri lanka, tea ella, tea estate sri lanka, sri lanka hiking

I was standing on top of a mountain, hardly a noise to ruin the moment, as I marveled at what I was looking at. Too often we just grab a product and don’t stop for even a second to imagine where it came from, how it was made or who were the people behind it.

Ella is has become one of the major tourist hotspots of Sri Lanka and it is largely due to the epic scenery and hikes in the region such as Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak. However, it’s the smaller attractions, hidden gems, and laid-back vibes of the town that keep people in Ella for up to a week at a time. One of those unique attractions is the Nine Arch Bridge in between Ella station and Demodara station. In this blog post, I will share with you everything you need to know about visiting the Nine Arch Bridge in Sri Lanka.

NINE ARCH BRIDGE IN ELLA

The Nine Arch Bridge in Ella is on the Demodara loop and spans 91 meters at a height of 24m. The beautiful nine arches make it a very picturesque spot especially as it is located in a dense jungle and agricultural setting. Behind the railway, a forest is booming, and below, tea leaves are being cultivated. It’s truly one of the most amazing places to visit in Sri Lanka.

If you’re interested in the trains and railways of Sri Lanka, you’ll my article about the iconic Sri Lanka train experience from Kandy to Ella.

It’s highly reviewed with hundreds opting to tick off these three bucket list items in Sri Lanka with one well-organized tour.

Nine Arch Bridge History

The bridge was built at Gotuwala between the Ella and Demodara stations during the British Colonial period. Locally it is known as ‘Ahas Namaye Palama’ meaning nine skies bridge in Sinhala. The name derives from the visual experience. When you stand below the bridge and look up you can see the sky through the nine arches.

The unique part about this bridge is that it is built entirely from rocks, bricks, and cement with no use of steel or metals throughout the structure. The bridge was commissioned in 1941 and the story goes that as the bridge was being planned World War I broke out. The steel and metal materials destined to be used in the bridge were reassigned to be used for military purposes. The materials were then gathered in the form of rocks, bricks, and cement to make sure the bridge construction still went ahead.

The Nine Arch Bridge Experience

Many foreign and domestic tourists gather around and on the bridge in the hour before one of the trains is scheduled to pass over the bridge. On the day I visited the train was scheduled for 1230 pm but it was an hour late. Better early than late in these situations

There are a number of cafes in the hills with vantage points of the bridge but down at the bridge is where you want to be. The Nine Arch Bridge has a huge bend in it so in my opinion standing on the side the bridge bends away from makes for the best photos and accentuates the arch.

It’s a great spot for drone photography and videography and my friend Martin was filming while I took photos. Here is the video he shot:

If you want to get photos and videos with no people on the bridge (there’s quite a crowd during train time), be sure to arrive around sunrise or sunset for the best lighting and to avoid the crowds.

Hiking in Riverston, Matale in Sri Lanka was an unexpected highlight on my journey throughout the island. Riverston is a region best defined by the popular term, ‘off the beaten path’. We drove for several hours, parked in the middle of nowhere, and then embarked on a hike up the Riverston mountains to eventually find a peak.  We saw not a single other tourist and only a few locals working in the fields. This is one of the great off-the-beaten-path things to do in Sri Lanka.

THE RIVERSTON, MATALE HIKE IN SRI LANKA

The hike in Riverston hike begins at the Riverston Telecommunications Tower. We parked our car near a small river and began the trek from there towards the mountains

We headed across the river and through the rice fields and farmlands towards the Riverston mountains. There is minimal signage but luckily we had our guide Lukobanda to guide us up. The hike doesn’t have a specific name according to the locals other than the Riverston Peak Hike.

This peak in the mountains is called The Worlds End.

The hike is 5km long but not incredibly difficult although the constant incline means you need to be prepared to sweat in the tropic conditions.

The majority of the hike runs through the forest making it incredibly humid and sweaty. The terrain is dirt and roots so solid shoes are necessary. Make sure to bring at least 2 liters of water, sunscreen, and a hat.

The beauty of this Riverston hike was that we only had to hustle up the mountain for just over an hour before enjoying the epic viewpoint. It was a huge reward for minimal effort!

Sigiriya Rock is the number one tourist attraction in Sri Lanka and the main reason most tourists travel to Sigiriya. But it was another adventure that captivated me during our stay in Sigiriya. In fact, many other travelers I spoke to also agreed that Sigiriya Rock was great but it was Pidurangala Rock that was the more memorable experience when it comes to listing their favorite places to visit in Sri Lanka.

A Guide to Pidurangala Rock

This is exactly what I did and I highly recommend it.

pidurangala, pidurangala rock, pidurangala temple, pidurangala rock temple, back of beyond pidurangala, sigiriya pidurangala, pidurangala sri lanka, pidurangala hike, pidurangala rock sri lanka, pidurangala sigiriya

Pidurangala Rock Hike

At the base of Pidurangala Rock, you will find Pidurangala Sigiri Rajamaha Viharaya, which is a white temple. Pass through the temple and pay the $3 USD entrance fee (much lower than the $30 USD entry fee for Sigiriya Rock. At this point, women can also loan a scarf to cover their shoulders and legs if they forgot to bring one or wear longer clothing.

Tip: If you are on a tight budget, definitely do the Pidurangala Hike as you will still get to enjoy Sigiriya Rock but $30 is a lot for a backpacker on a budget.

The hike doesn’t ease you in. After only a few minutes we were at the base of a huge row of stairs. Not what you want at five in the morning but they didn’t last long.

The hike only took us 20 minutes and was relatively easy despite the incline and some parts of the path being a little bit ‘off-road’.

Halfway through the hike, you will reach the Pidurangala Temple, which takes you back in time although not quite rivaling the history of Sigiriya Rock.

Pidurangala Temple

The Royal Cave Temple is survived only by a few remains. A rock wall still stands to show the foundation of what was once a rock temple. We missed it on the way up in the dark but stopped to check it out on the way down. A huge reclining Buddha, lays inside the temple and we also didn’t stop to take it in on the hike up but it was unmissable on the way down. It has been reconstructed with bricks but much of the original structure remains intact.

Pidurangala Hike: Reaching the Viewpoint

After you reach the temple there are only 5-10 minutes of trekking remaining. However, this part of the trail involves some bouldering. While it may seem easy to many it might be a bit challenging for some. There are no dangerous sections just a few boulders, which require a big step up.

Sunrise view from Pidurangala Rock

Once you reach the top you will have the best seat in the house (the whole of Sigiriya) for not only the sunrise but also of Sigiriya Rock. The sun doesn’t rise directly over the Sigiriya Rock but it was still a beautiful way to start the morning watching the sun light up the valley.

We arrived an hour before sunrise. Typical photographers running by the motto, ‘It’s better to be early than late.’ However, it was nice to just sit and chill, enjoying the isolation and peace up top. Only a couple of other tourists joined us closer to sunrise time. If you want to time it perfectly I would arrive about 45 minutes before the official sunrise time for that day, although this depends on how long the hike will take you.

It’s definitely worth the early wake-up and was one of my cherished moments from my time in Sri Lanka. Sunset at Pidurangala Rock would also be spectacular as it was over at Sigiriya Rock!

WHERE TO STAY NEAR PIDURANGALA ROCK AND SIGIRIYA ROCK

We stayed at Hotel Sigiriya, which is the most popular hotel in the region and is incredibly luxurious. This is how you do Sigiriya in style! It has a pool with a view of Sigiriya Rock, in case you didn’t get a good enough view at Pidurangala.

The Kandy to Ella train journey is said to be one of the most scenic train journeys in not only just Sri Lanka but the world. So with a few days to spare in Sri Lanka, I decided to purchase a ticket for $1.50 and climb aboard for the 5-hour journey. Yes, the train really does cost just $1.50.

THE KANDY TO ELLA TRAIN IN SRI LANKA

I have now taken the train in both directions. From Kandy to Ella and in reverse from Ella to Kandy. On both occasions, I just arrived at the train station and bought the cheapest ticket and walked on. I didn’t sit in a seat, I preferred to an open door and hang my legs over the edge for the entire journey.

How to get tickets for the Kandy to Ella Train

You can purchase the tickets directly at the station or try and prebook through a hotel, travel agent, or by visiting the station the day before.

UPDATE:  You can now book tickets online at 12GO Asia. The prices are slightly more than if you bought them at the station but it can be worth it to have tickets secured if you have set travel dates and can’t afford to miss the train if it is fully booked (this does happen)

Book Kandy to Ella train tickets now at 12GO (you can also book train tickets for other trips around Sri Lanka.)

Our Sri Lanka train ride was on one of the famous blue trains and was several carriages in length but they also have red carriages and it just depends on what time of day as to what color your train is. For photos, blue is quite cool and it seems the common color but don’t be disappointed if you have a maroon train. You can purchase 1st class tickets but I chose the cheapest ticket and had my own seat (despite not using it), luggage storage, and a table in front of me to share with four others. The carriage wasn’t hot despite the heat outside and it was an incredibly comfortable journey.

MY KANDY TO ELLA TRAIN RIDE VIDEO

Here is a short highlight video I made of the journey:

Why is the Kandy to Ella train journey so amazing?

The train also passes through multiple tunnels. The kids on my train thought it was a great game to scream the entire time we were inside the tunnel until the train finally emerged.

stand or purchase some snacks from vendors who wander about. I spent my time in the open doorway, watching as we passed by tea plantations, cruised through villages, and crossed bridges with eerily huge drop-offs.

Hanging out of the train gives you the best views and is an awesome feeling but be careful not to leave your limbs out of the train at the wrong time as there are trees and tunnels that come close to the train.  The Kandy to Ella Train is just one of many bucket list items to add to your Sri Lanka Itinerary.

Being in 3rd class you will meet a lot of locals and most will enjoy having a chat with you. I really enjoyed stopping at the stations and watching the daily happenings of locals on and off the train and tried to capture the vibe of the journey with my photos as well as getting some iconic travel shots hanging out of the train.

If you are considering the options about how to get from Ella to Kandy or Kandy to Ella, there really isn’t a decision to be made. If you take the bus you have made a huge mistake as you have missed out on the journey of a lifetime on the Kandy to Ella train. Hanging out with the locals on the train was one of my favorite experiences in Sri Lanka.

What are my favorite pieces of travel gear?

There are four pieces of gear that I simply never travel without. These are four items that I using right now and this list gets updated every year! Here are my travel essentials.

  • Packing Cube Set: Once you cube you’ll never go back. Organize your clothes within your luggage with these smart mesh containers. It will revolutionize your packing.
  • Quick-Dry Towel: A quick-dry towel is a must for travelers. It hardly takes up any room and dries in seconds.
  • Travel Wallet: Keep your passport, wallet, and vaccine card safe as well as any forms and important documents you need to store.
  • Grayl GeoPress Water Filter Bottle: I’ve used this for three years. It filters your water with one press and you can drink directly from it. Never buy a plastic water bottle again!

DIYALUMA FALLS HIKE IN SRI LANKA

In this blog post, I’ll share everything you need to know about hiking to Diyaluma Falls in Sri Lanka.

How to get to Diyaluma Falls

There are several ways to do this hike and several starting points. First I will tell you how I did it and then give you an alternative.

Our driver dropped us at Makaldenya Junction on Poonagala Road, which is actually way above the Diyaluma Falls. From here we trekked down the hill arriving at Diyaluma Upper falls after about 30 minutes. From there Diyaluma Falls is a 10-minute walk.

To get down we continued down the hill towards Koslanda village, visiting the small, local rubber factory on our way down.

The alternative route is to begin at Koslanda village and hike up to the top of Diyaluma Falls, check it out, and then continue to Upper Diyaluma Falls before returning the same way you came.

Diyaluma Falls Hike

We began the hike at Poonagala Road. The hike was almost entirely downhill and led us through the long grass but the trail was marked the whole way. It appeared that the trail wasn’t used too often as the trail was quite overgrown in many parts.

After about 30 minutes we reached the top of Diyaluma Falls. Here you have a series of pools cascading towards the edge of the cliff. When the falls finally reach the edge they fall into one final pool before crashing 628 feet into the pool, far below. This is the 2nd highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and it is hard to get a good look from this vantage point but if you are game enough you can peer over the edge.

After chilling here for over an hour we headed back up the track passing the upper falls and arriving at the top of the upper falls. This was a 15-minute hike and we just followed the track alongside the upper falls. Here we found more pools. It looked quite average until we explored further towards the edge of the upper Diyaluma falls and found a spot where we could jump. We checked the depth found an area with no rocks and spent the next hour flipping into the refreshing water.

Hiking out of Diyaluma Falls

To get out you can head back up to Poonagala road if you parked your car there. Luckily for us, our driver was waiting for us at the bottom so we had to hike for 30 minutes but it was all downhill. On the way out you will pass through a small village that specializes in producing rubber. We saw the process in all of its stages from the collection of rubber from the tree to the finished product hanging to dry in the sheds.

Once out of the small village you will be back to where you began and can even choose to head to the base of the falls for one last photo if you didn’t get quite enough!
