The Ultimate Bali Packing List

Here’s everything you need to know to pack for your trip to Bali. I’ll jump into the actual list of items you should definitely pack for Bali and then go through Balinese climate, religion, and basic travel hacks. I’ll finally detail a full Bali packing checklist so you can check each item off and cover all your bases as you fill up your suitcase. To sum it up, here’s everything you need to know about packing for Bali.

Things to know when packing for Bali

There are a few key factors that make Bali different from other countries and therefore make your packing list different are the following:

• Humidity: Bali can be sticky, sweaty, and a bit awkward at times. Waterproof dry bags, phone covers, insect repellents, and other measures need to be taken into account.
• Rain: Bali can be boiling hot one minute and pouring with rain the next. You can still have an awesome time but a waterproof jacket that isn’t too thick is key.
• Water: There are a lot of waterfalls and island hopping activities so a GoPro or waterproof camera can be a really fun tech toy to help record your adventures.

Grayl GeoPress Water Filter

This item is first on the list because it’s a literal lifesaver. Bali belly is an unfortunate part of Indonesian travel and one that most people experience. Yes, you need clean water, but pretending to be an earthy boho traveler while buying multiple plastic water bottles a day is pretty crass.

I’ve been using this Grayl filter for the past few years in the most remote places in the world, and have never gotten sick. In one press and less than 8 seconds, you have pure, filtered water that goes wherever you go. A pretty awesome thing, if you ask me.

Reusable Water Bottle

Now the Grayl also stores the water you’ve just purified, but if you won’t have access to flowing water for a bit, or just like to keep your cool beverages cold, this vacuum-insulated Hydroflask is a great idea. I like to carry a liter of water with me for most adventures, so the 32oz option is great to pack for Bali.

Anti Diarrhea Tablets

Despite your best efforts, this is an item you may unfortunately need. Diarrhea in Bali is an inevitable truth, so the best thing you can do is to prepare. These tablets work quickly and effectively so your bad stomach days take up as little of your time in Bali as possible.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Did you know that Bali is found in the Coral Triangle? It’s part of one of the most ecologically important marine environments in the world, meaning we as tourists should visit as responsibly as possible. While most snorkeling around Bali is done on one of its neighboring islands, Gili T – getting in the habit of using reef-safe sunscreen is great for the local environment.

This Raw Elements sunblock is reef-safe and non-nano Zinc Oxide, making it safe for you and the coral. It also stays put for up to 80 minutes in the water, making it economical as well.

Insect Repellent

Mosquitos in Bali are more than just annoying. They also carry the risk of Dengue fever, which is a great way to ruin your vacation. Pack a DEET-free mosquito repellant to safely prevent bites. If you prefer an option with DEET, this is a great alternative.

Quick-Dry Shorts

Whether you’re getting in the ocean, a waterfall, or getting caught in the rain, not having to worry about damp and stinky clothes is huge. Plus for minimalists like me, being able to pack a pair of shorts that triple as sportswear, swimwear, and loungewear is pretty great.

Hemp T-Shirt

With the hot and humid Bali weather, a few comfy t-shirts should be staples in your wardrobe. These hemp blend t-shirts go above and beyond by boasting UPF 30 sun protection and anti-odor properties. As a bonus, they’re also modest enough to wear while visiting temples.

Warm Hoody

Too often, people pack for a tropical vacation and are completely blindsided when freezing on a rainy day, in the mountains, or even during the cold plane ride over. If you’re planning to hike Mt Batur or any of the neighboring volcanos, definitely pack warm layers. Even driving around in the evenings can be much more pleasant with a warm hoody in your pack.

Sarong

As mentioned earlier, a sarong is necessary to enter many Balinese temples. For ladies, carrying one that doubles as a wrap skirt or beach cover-up is useful. For guys, a sarong can double as a beach blanket or extra layer, and you can choose your own over a local temple rental.

Multi-Purpose Shoes

I said it before, but I’m a minimalist, and these Teva sandals are a traveler’s dream. They’re comfortable and non-dorky casual wear. These are designed to be used as water shoes, and also tackle hikes extremely well. They’ll certainly tick all the boxes and leave room for more items in the Bali packing list.

Lightweight Rain Jacket

First up is a rain jacket, which is always in my adventure backpack. From late-night moped rides to protection from torrential downpours and waterfall spray, you’ll be happy to have one of these in your bag. They’re also useful as an extra layer for the Mt. Batur climb. Find a great option here.

Dry Bag

If you’re traveling to Bali in the rainy season, this could be simple insurance against a waterlogged camera. A sturdy dry bag with backpack straps is also great for keeping your electronics safe on waterfall hikes or boat tours. Meanwhile, this EarthPak dry bag provides a more budget-friendly option and is all most travelers need.

Travel Towel

Even if you’re planning to stay at a resort with unlimited beach towels, it’s handy to bring your own travel towel. To start, they take up very little space for how useful they are. They fold much smaller than regular towels, meaning you’re more likely to throw one in your bag for an adventure day.

Also, they’re extremely versatile. Take one to a yoga class, the outdoor gym, or to dry off after a jump in a mountain waterfall. These travel towels come in a handful of colors and prints.

Waterproof Phone Case

Whether you’re island hopping or tip-toeing behind the enormous waterfalls of Bali, it’s a wise investment to get yourself a waterproof phone cover. Not only do they keep your phone safe from water damage, but you’ll be able to take photos too.

A cheap phone pouch like this will do the job. However, if you want to turn your phone into an underwater camera rig, this Axis-GO will be your best bet.

Travel Adapter

The next few items on the list are all electronics to simplify your travels, starting with the travel adapter. A few newer hotels will have universal outlets, but for the most part, this is an essential item.

This universal travel adapter features 2 USB outlets as well as a universal plug. Essentially, you can charge 3 devices at a time, in up to 150 countries. That’s a pretty great deal for a couple of bucks.

Power Bank

This is another item I always travel with. Carrying a power bank is especially helpful in places that occasionally experience power outages, or in countries with different power outlets to your own. I sometimes can’t be bothered to find my travel adapter and charge directly from my power bank. However, you can only top up indiscriminately if your power bank has a massive capacity like this one.

Underwater Camera

Bali is one of the best places in the world to bring an action camera. Whether you’re learning to surf, visiting the raging waterfalls, or filming your floating breakfast (lol), having an underwater camera on hand is a great call. For this, the GoPro Hero 12 is my top recommendation. With HyperSmooth available in slow motion and ultra-high definition, dull, shaky footage is a thing of the past.

Selfie Stick

Here are a few accessories for the GoPro. First off, don’t be ashamed of using a selfie stick. They capture some of the best and most engaging angles.

I personally use the Sandmarc GoPro Pole. It’s longer than the name-brand GoPro stick and is a simple telescoping pole. It’s a robust accessory for getting the shot and should be included in any aspiring content creator’s kit.

Dome Port

Another essential GoPro accessory is the dome port. You can use these to create awesome over/under shots, and the double handles on this model provide more stability underwater. If you didn’t invest in the Axis GO housing for your phone, I’d highly recommend a cheap dome port like this for your GoPro.

Backpacking Bag

To start, my go-to way to travel is a solid backpacking bag, like this. I live out of my bag, so the 75L capacity is great for me. For you, it might mean you can overpack to your heart’s content. If your trip to Bali includes backpacking through Southeast Asia, however, this might be the perfect size for you.

Perks of this bag include 2 separate zippered access points to the main compartment, plus top draw-string access, and plenty of zippered pockets, clip-on points, and water bottle holders. It also includes a very lightweight day pack that’s served me well on many an adventure.

Travel Day Pack

As mentioned above, a day pack is an essential part of the Bali traveler’s kit. You can carry your camera, food, and water on an adventure day, or safely carry your laptop to your co-working space on the back of a moped. This backpack is also the perfect carry-on size for your flight into Bali, and can comfortably fit your laptop, electronics, toiletries, and a change of clothes.

Packing Cubes

Even if you’re not living out of your backpack, using packing cubes is a major travel hack. You can separate your gym clothes from your nicer outfits, keep your swimwear separate, or if you’re really kooky, color coordinate everything. It’s the closest thing to traveling with a wardrobe, and for me, a must-have item on the Bali packing list.

Passport Wallet

I’ve had multiple friends lose track of their passports, forgetting them here or there or leaving them behind on a random island. I’ve never had that problem because I’ve always used a passport wallet. They protect your passport from damage and spills, and it’s great to have your spare cards and vaccine record all in one place. I like to store this separately from my other things just in case.

Money Belt

The money belt is the cooler little brother to the ’90s fanny pack. This one is made of satin so it slips seamlessly under a shirt and stays cool. It includes 2 zippered pockets and an adjustable waistband, and of course, peace of mind.

The Buahan

This is one of my absolute favorites as the jungle setting is just INCREDIBLE! Once you set foot into the Buahan, one of the best hotels with a private pool in Bali, you will feel at one with nature. Nestled deep within the jungle, this 5-star adults-only heaven is the perfect tropical escape.

In additional to your own room with a private pool, you’ll find an outdoor swimming pool, full spa treatment, a world-class restaurant with an outdoor dining area, continental, and buffet, or à la carte breakfast.

Of course, one thing sets the Buahan apart: The quiet and the seclusion. With only three breathtaking Bale rooms equipped with private pools on a gorgeous terrace, you are guaranteed privacy and peace. 

The Rainforest Pool Bale offers a full rainforest view and a partial glimpse into the mountains. The Buahan Valley Pool Bale is an amazing option with a gorgeous, full view of the mountain and the valley, allowing you to bask in the glorious sights while enjoying the melodies of the Ayung River. If you want to add a majestic waterfall to your vacation, you can go for the Riverside Jungle Pool Bale.

Soori Bali

However, I added this hotel to the list as it has multiple different pools that never get crowded due to the small amount of rooms at the hotel.

The Sunken Pool Bar is also open to offer you a refreshing drink after getting a body treatment, relaxing by the pool, working out with a personal trainer, or just taking your children to the kids club. 

Just one secret! If you want some alone time with your partner, there’s a secret infinity pool in the cave behind the waterfall!

Mandapa, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve

How to get to the Nusa Islands

There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:

1. Book your ticket: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go. You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
2. Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook.
3. Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. Alright, let’s get stuck into this list. Nusa Penida is honestly such a fun island. Please stay for at least five days. You will NOT regret it! These are the 27 BEST things to do on Nusa Penida… until I find more.

Kelingking Cliff Lookout

Here is a great little tip for enjoying Kelingking Secret Point Beach from a unique angle. Instead of hiking down the stairs, head to the right along the cliffs. There is a worn path along the cliff edge but no railing so be careful. Here you can find multiple epic viewpoints, with arguably a better look at the beach than the hike.

It’s an awesome spot for sunset and doesn’t involve any hiking for those of you out there looking for the easy option. We came back two nights later after our beach session down at the bottom and just caught the sunset up on these cliffs. Definitely one of the best sunset spots on the island of Nusa Penida and a unique angle of Kelingking Secret Point Beach.

Nusa Penida Treehouse (Rumah Pohon)

The Tree House (Rumah Pohon) on Nusa Penida has become one of the most popular attractions and one of the most popular places to stay! It is perched up on the mountain at Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) viewpoint near Atuh Beach.

It is part of the Thousand Island viewpoint area costing only 10,000 rupiah to park and enter, which is less than $1 USD. The best part about this treehouse is that it is actually a house and you can rent it out for pretty cheap considering how popular this spot has become and how insane the view is.

Banah Cliffs

Banah Cliff Point in Nusa Penida is a hidden gem that showcases the unspoiled beauty of nature. Nestled along the rugged coastline of the island, this magnificent cliff offers awe-inspiring views of the turquoise waters and dramatic rock formations. If you’re seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, Banah Cliff Viewpoint should be at the top of your bucket list.

Diamond Beach Viewpoint

On the right-hand side of Atuh Beach is a staircase that leads up the hill. The viewpoint is next to Atuh Beach but looks out over the bay next door. You can get the Atuh Beach view from both sides but I assumed you guys would find that anyway.

This is just an epic little spot we stumbled upon and It’s a pretty epic viewpoint though so when you are at Atuh Beach definitely get up to this side of the beach and check it out. Here is a quick snap we grabbed looking down the coast from this spot.

Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach, located on the eastern tip of Nusa Penida Island in Indonesia, is renowned for its captivating natural beauty. The beach boasts an exceptional landscape characterized by pristine white sands, crystal clear turquoise waters, and towering cliffs. Its unique rock formations, reminiscent of glittering diamonds, give this beach its distinctive name. A steep staircase carved into the cliffs provides access to the beach, offering breathtaking panoramic views during the descent.

The most important rock though is the diamond-shaped rock in the shallows of the water. The beach is after all named after this diamond-shaped rock I believe.

Tembeling Beach, Natural Pool & Forest

Tembeling Beach, tucked away at the end of a thrilling motorbike journey through the woods, is a secret gem worth exploring. It’s a place you’d like if you’re up for an adventure that’s not crowded with tourists. On the way, you’ll come across Tembeling’s natural pools.

Imagine a scene straight from a jungle film – that’s what the Tembeling Forest looks like from inside the canyon. After soaking in that sight, you can move down the winding stairs leading to the Tembeling Natural Pools. There are two pools, with the first one being the largest. Despite being surrounded by orange and brown cliffs, the water in the pool is surprisingly clear and blue.

Follow the trail further and you’ll reach Tembeling Beach. Although it’s not the best beach on Nusa Penida, it’s worth a visit. The beach is flanked by towering cliffs and has a small stretch of sand. While the sea here can be a bit rough, the natural pools offer a safer option for swimming. Be sure to keep an eye on the currents and stay safe.

Suwehan Beach

Suwehan Beach is a place that epitomizes Nusa Penida. You’ll find huge towering cliffs, crystal clear yet strikingly blue water, an insane staircase down to the beach and maybe a turtle or two. In 2018 an earthquake ruined the stairs but by the end of the year, the locals had fixed them enough to make the access possible yet very sketchy. Nowadays, Suwehan Beach is one of the top places to visit on Nusa Penida.

Abangan Hills Viewpoint

On the drive down to Suwehan Beach, keep your eyes out on the left for a little hill. I pulled my bike over and went for a look at the viewpoint, which is known as Abangan Hills. The viewpoint has a few trees on it and looks out over the many rice fields on Nusa Penida. It could be a great spot for sunrise but was still nice during the midday sun.

Saren Cliff Viewpoint

If you continue down the coast from Tembeling Beach, you will reach Saren Cliff Viewpoint. In fact, there is a shortcut road from Tembeling, which is pretty hard to explain and not on the maps. I’ll try. As you drive down towards Tembeling, halfway along you will see a road that goes up the hill on your left. This road is paved and will take you to Saren Cliff Viewpoint.

The drive there is pretty damn bumpy but that is nothing new on Nusa Penida. The viewpoint was, of course, empty but was such a chill spot to take in the towering cliffs. There was a sign for Saren Cliff Viewpoint that suggested it may have been more popular at some stage. There is a swing and some beautiful big trees but the highlight is sitting on the edge of cliffs in the middle of nowhere enjoying the grandeur of Nusa Penida.

Gamat Bay Snorkeling

Everyone does the Manta Ray snorkeling on Nusa Penida, and for good reason but the island also has some INSANE snorkeling spots. Gamat Bay is probably top of the lot from what I have experienced but I’m sure there are others too. Our boat driver asked me where we wanted to go after the Manta snorkeling and I looked at his poster.

I had snorkeled at Crystal Bay and done the Toyapakeh drift before so I pointed at Gamat Bay and told him we could have a look there. What a decision! We jumped off the boat, and immediately realized the water at Gamat Bay is much colder than at Manta Point and Crystal Bay. The depth ranged from a few meters closer to shore all the way down to a perfect free-diving depth of 5-20 meters.

Puncak Mundi (Highest Point on Nusa Penida)

The highest point on Nusa Penida is Puncak Mundi, which is a series of traditional temples. I decided to make the journey up the very, very steep hills to check it out. When I arrived, not much was happening but it was a cool little spot to check out. I would try and visit during prayer or an event so you can see all of the candles and rituals in action. The drive up here is incredibly scenic.

Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave

Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave, located on Nusa Penida Island in Indonesia, is a significant cultural and spiritual site. This unique cave temple is renowned for its sacred atmosphere and intriguing architecture. To enter the cave, visitors must climb through a narrow opening that resembles the mouth of a mythical creature. Inside, they will be mesmerized by the vastness of the cavern and the intricate Hindu shrines and offerings adorning the walls.

The cave is considered a place of prayer and meditation, attracting both local devotees and curious travelers seeking a spiritual experience. Teletubbies Hill Viewpoint

I have to admit, I almost didn’t visit because of the name. It sounded like some touristy photo spot. However, when I did finally make the drive into the mountains to see what this spot was all about, I was pleasantly surprised. Nusa Penida is known for its epic coastline. However, there are actually many rice fields and rolling hills throughout the island, which is actually really large.

Teletubbies Hill is a great spot to understand just how diverse the landscapes are on Nusa Penida and it was incredibly interesting flying the drone here scoping out all the different contours, valleys, and canyons in this region. Here are a couple of my favorite shots from Teletubbies Hill.

Pandan Beach (Hike from Crystal Bay)

If you are feeling a bit adventurous there is a path that leads you from Crystal Bay up and over the hill. What you will discover on the other side of the hill next door is the beautiful Pandan Bay. It is safe to assume you will be the only person there as most people just hang out at Crystal Bay.

There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:

1. Book your ticket: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go. You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
2. Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook.
3. Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.

Nusa Lembongan Travel Tips

Nusa Lembongan has slowly grown as a tourist destination thanks to its good surf. I had only heard about the crazy cliff jumping on nearby Nusa Ceningan but there were also so many awesome things to do on Nusa Lembongan. This is definitely known as the surf destination amongst the Nusa Islands. Sunset at Devil’s Tears

After enjoying the tears from the devil we headed around the corner to check out what we could find. More outcrops are being smashed by water and some incredible tide pools. We knew we had to come back for sunset when we found the tide pools.

With a few days on the island, you’ll have ample time to immerse yourself in its breathtaking landscapes, do a few activities, and appreciate the rugged beauty that Nusa Penida has to offer.

What is it Like Driving on Nusa Penida?

The roads in some parts are fantastic but to get to many of the waterfalls and beaches the roads were pretty crazy. At times we were just driving over small rocks. If you aren’t confident on a moped this could be some terrain too heavy to handle. If you aren’t confident in driving, you can rent a car on Nusa Penida with private driver, which is a good option to visit multiple spots safely in a day with a group of friends.

There were a few spots where locals asked us to pay a small entrance or parking fee. For example, as we left Kelingking we had to hand over 50 cents for parking even though nothing was mentioned beforehand. Just enjoy the views hand over the small fee and continue on your journey.

Drive safe kids! This was me on my first solo trip to Indonesia!!! I learned my lesson and drive a lot safer now and have had no troubles while on the Nusa Islands.

Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida?

Choosing between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida can be a tough decision when you have limited time to explore the Nusa Islands. Here are some key factors to help you decide:

Staying on Nusa Lembongan:

• Pros:
  • Multiple beautiful beaches
  • Easy access to the entire island within a short moped ride
  • Opportunity to explore the captivating rocky coastline, such as Devil’s Tears
  • Affordable accommodation options
  • Bridge connection to Nusa Ceningan for cliff jumping and further exploration
• Cons:
  • Surfing requires a boat trip to reach the reef
  • Half-day boat trip needed to swim with Manta Rays or visit Nusa Penida

Staying on Nusa Penida:

• Pros:
  • Impressive coastline with breathtaking cliff views at every turn
  • Extensive moped adventures across the island, which is larger than Nusa Lembongan
  • Relaxed atmosphere with eco-stays and vegan cafes
  • Highlights include Kelingking Beach, Manta Rays near the coastline, and good snorkeling opportunities
• Cons:
  • Some roads may be rough for mopeds in certain areas
  • No access to cliff jumping on Nusa Ceningan
  • Slightly higher hotel prices compared to Nusa Lembongan (still affordable)

Personally, if you enjoy epic cliff views and exploring the land on thrilling moped adventures, Nusa Penida may be your preference. However, missing out on cliff jumping at the Blue Lagoon on Nusa Ceningan would be a disappointment. If you have to make a choice, consider staying in Nusa Penida and try to arrange a day trip to Nusa Lembongan. Nusa Lembongan’s central location makes it an ideal base for experiencing the best of both islands.

Three Best Activities on Nusa Penida

In this section, I’ll share my three personal favorite activities on Nusa Penida.

Visit Kelingking Beach

The Instagram famous coastal cliffscape, which truly does look like a T-rex doesn’t disappoint. I still remember the moment I laid eyes on Kelingking Beach. I watched the crystal clear water slowly form into a wave before crashing below us, in what seemed like slow motion.

We took a short trek down the spine of the T-Rex and took in the epic drop-offs down each side. This is definitely my favorite thing to do on Nusa Penida and is just one of those landscapes that make you feel small. It’s easily the most popular beach on Nusa Penida, and for good reason. Nusa Penida has so many amazing views making it hard to pick a favorite. But when the cliffs form in the shape of a Tyrannosaurus Rex at Kelingking Secret Point Beach it is bound to be a crowd favorite. Kelingking actually translates into English meaning Pinkie a term referencing the smallest finger on the hand.

Nusa Ceningan is a small tropical island, which is part of Bali in Indonesia. The island is nestled between the popular Nusa Lembongan and the large island of Nusa Penida. The trio of islands is an awesome spot to explore and get away from the craziness of mainland Bali.

Nusa Ceningan was the adrenaline spot of the Nusa Islands in my opinion with cliff jumping around every corner. I spent five nights in Nusa Lembongan and day trip to Nusa Ceningan, which is accessible by bridge. Ceningan is quite a small island and I didn’t even rent a moped, instead, I opted to discover the coast on foot with my two mates.

How to get to Nusa Ceningan from Nusa Penida

1. Catch a boat to Nusa Lembongan: Start your journey by taking a boat from Nusa Penida to Nusa Lembongan. The distance across both islands is very small so it’s convenient to cliff jump on Nusa Ceningan and then hang out at a beach half an hour later on Nusa Lembongan. You won’t need to make the choice of either Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Ceningan… you can have both.

WHERE IS COBAN TALUN WATERFALL

We stayed in Malang when we visited Coban Talun. For us, it was a 1-hour drive. There is a parking lot and a small entrance fee of $1-2. From the parking lot, you just need to follow the signs and it is a very easy path to follow down to the waterfall.

This is an adventure bag. It is full of trash. Every time I go on an adventure I collect one adventure bag full of trash. It’s my small way of saying thanks to mother nature for allowing me to enjoy her beautiful creations.

If we have time to go on an adventure we have time to collect an adventure bag on the way back out of the trail once we have enjoyed the waterfall, the hike, or the beach. Adventure hard!
