Visit the Baby Taj Mahal / Tomb of Itimad Ud Daulah

The Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, affectionately referred to as the ‘Baby Taj’, is a charming mausoleum located on the eastern bank of the Yamuna river in Agra. Built between 1622 and 1628 by Nur Jahan, the wife of Emperor Jahangir, for her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg, the monument is considered a precursor to the Taj Mahal due to its intricate carvings and extensive use of white marble.

Take a tuk-tuk to Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandra

I decided to grab a tuk-tuk and continue on my tour of the temples in Agra. Situated in the suburb of Sikandra, on the outskirts of Agra, lies the majestic Akbar’s Tomb, the final resting place of the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great. Built between 1605 and 1613, this mausoleum showcases a harmonious blend of architectural styles from Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist, Jain, and Christian traditions, reflecting Akbar’s philosophy of religious tolerance.

The sprawling complex is marked by a beautiful gateway, adorned with intricate carvings and floral patterns. Inside, the monument consists of five levels, with the cenotaph on the top floor open to the sky. This tomb, unlike other Mughal tombs, is oriented towards the rising sun instead of Mecca. The vast surrounding gardens, laid out in the Charbagh style, house various wildlife species, making it a serene and tranquil spot. A visit to Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandra offers a rich historical experience and a deep appreciation for its architectural elegance and the progressive vision of the emperor it honors.

Sheroes cafe is run by acid attack survivors as part of the #StopAcidAttacks movement. The food is awesome and you will be supporting an amazing cause and a courageous group of women. They serve western style food and local dishes. I had a vege-burger, fries, and a mango smoothie.

The best part about the whole experience was finding out there are no prices on the menu. You are encouraged to pay as you wish!

The Yamuna River, often referred to as Jamuna in various Indian languages, holds significant geographical and cultural importance in India. As the largest tributary of the sacred Ganges River, it originates from the Yamunotri Glacier in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. Flowing southwards for about 1,376 kilometers, the river traverses several states including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi before merging with the Ganges at the Triveni Sangam in Allahabad (Prayagraj).

The Yamuna River is a central feature in Agra. Many families are using the river for washing, playing and fishing. I found myself having to walk across the bridge during the day on a couple of occasions and stopped for a while to watch all of the action going on along the banks of the Yamuna.

The Mehtab Bagh is probably one of my favorite places to visit in Agra in one day. The entrance fee was only a couple of dollars but you look straight across the Yamuna River at the Taj Mahal. In fact, I thought this was a better view than from in the Taj Mahal.

Experiencing the sunset at Mehtab Bagh, also known as the Taj Mahal Viewpoint, is a breathtaking spectacle that captures the ethereal beauty of one of the world’s most iconic monuments. Mehtab Bagh is a centuries-old garden complex situated directly across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal. As the sun descends, the fading light paints the Taj Mahal in an array of hues, from soft golden to mesmerizing pink, enhancing its marble architecture and providing a visual treat that’s nothing short of magical. The lush gardens of Mehtab Bagh, away from the usual crowd, offer a tranquil space to sit, relax and soak in the awe-inspiring view. Have a local delicacy ‘Petha’ for dessert at the Bazaar

I couldn’t believe it when the vendor told me it was made from pumpkin. It looks like a normal gelatin-type sweet and even tastes like Turkish delight. Petha comes in so many different flavors and they were all actually really tasty.

I tried chocolate, pineapple, and strawberry and I just wouldn’t have been able to pick the origin as a pumpkin. Petha is definitely a local delicacy to check out and maybe take home as a souvenir. You will find a Petha store on most market streets.

WHERE TO STAY IN JAIPUR

• Treebo Aroma Residency (Budget) I stayed in Treebo Aroma Residency which is a 3-star hotel for just $16 USD per night. It was a cheap base for my adventures. The location was central enough for us to tuk-tuk to most places without too much hassle. This is a great option for an adventure base at a budget price.

Okay, let’s get into this list of the top places to visit in Jaipur so you can start creating your ultimate one-day itinerary for Jaipur.

Amber Fort

This fort is easily the most impressive of all architectural structures we visited while in Jaipur. A huge lake is located at the foot of the fort before a winding path leads visitors up towards the main courtyard. Goats and dogs run wild throughout the fort while thousands of pigeons flock to the perimeters where they are fed daily by locals.

Amber Fort or Amer Fort as it was referred to by our tuk-tuk drivers, has some impressive rooms and details. Arches and fine hand-made drawings and designs are spread throughout the fort. If you are on a budget, seeing the fort alone will be more than enough and it is free! Although if you have a little extra cash to splash the Amber Palace will set you back 500rp ($8).

This is definitely one of the best places to visit in Jaipur in one day and if you only have one day I highly suggest getting to Amber Fort. It should be your number one spot on the bucket list.

Sunset at Nahargarh Fort

Perched on the rugged Aravalli Hills overlooking Jaipur city is Nahargarh Fort, a majestic fortress that stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and architectural grandeur. Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the fort’s name Nahargarh translates to ‘abode of tigers,’ symbolizing its strength and grandeur. Renowned for its intricate Indo-European architecture, the fort offers visitors a glimpse into the opulence of the royal era. A tour of the fort’s interior reveals beautifully decorated rooms and sprawling courtyards, while the fort’s exterior boasts panoramic views of the bustling city below and the serene sunset above. Nahar means tiger. Garh means fort. In English, this spectacular fortress translates to the Tiger Fort. Up in the hills of Jaipur, the Nahargarh Fort walls wind along the ridges of the mountains. Standing on the fort walls you will overlook neighborhoods brimming with intense action. If you arrive before sunset you can wander through the gallery or the wax museum.

As the sun set, we found ourselves overlooking a neighborhood, which bordered a huge sand dune. The homes on the edge of the sand dunes were almost submerged in sand. Hundreds of children played cricket and games on the dunes as we watched the last light of the day fade beneath the horizon. Definitely add this spot to your Jaipur one-day itinerary.

The Amber Palace is an architectural marvel nestled atop a hill in the outskirts of Jaipur. Built in the 16th century by Raja Man Singh, the fort is an exquisite blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles, showcasing intricate carvings, expansive courtyards, and magnificent artwork. The palace comprises several remarkable structures like Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, Sheesh Mahal, and Sukh Niwas, each offering a glimpse into the grandeur of a bygone era. Go on a Safari

This isn’t your average safari and I’m sorry if you are about to be disappointed. I am talking about an urban safari. Take a tuk-tuk anywhere in the city to your destination and the safari begins.

On the streets of Jaipur, you can expect to spot camels in the traffic, pigs eating the scraps, monkeys running riot, enormous cows causing traffic jams, well-fed dogs, masses of pigeons, mongoose, squirrels and an abundance of peacocks. I’ve heard the term urban jungle thrown around before but Jaipur is for real, an urban jungle.

One of my favorite nights in Jaipur was completely unplanned. We headed to the Hawa Mahal area and before we could make it to the rooftop cafe we were headed to, a man yelled out at us. He was indeed trying to befriend us so we would ultimately buy some textiles from his store.

Don’t be offended he is just working his corner. His name was Harish, he’s traveled all over the world and his secret sunset spot was incredibly cool. He hung out with us, offered us weed and became our best friend for the forty minutes it took the sun to set. He even took over my camera and shot a few photos for us.

Find a random rooftop and try and get on top of it for sunset. Beware monkeys!

Jaigarh Fort

The Jaigarh Fort, also known as the ‘Victory Fort’, stands majestically on the ‘Cheel ka Teela’ hills, offering a sweeping view of the Pink City, Jaipur. Built in 1726 by Jai Singh II, the fort was primarily designed as a defensive structure to protect the Amer Fort and palace complex. Its striking features include towering watchtowers, thick walls, and a strategic location, manifesting the fort’s military purpose. The fort is home to the world’s largest cannon on wheels, the ‘Jaivana Cannon,’ showcasing the military prowess of the bygone era.

Despite its austere exterior, the fort houses beautiful gardens, a water storage system, and palatial residential complexes inside, presenting an interesting contrast. A visit to Jaigarh Fort not only offers a glimpse into Jaipur’s historical military architecture but also provides a panoramic view of the city’s breathtaking landscapes.

If you are into history put this on your list as a place to visit in Jaipur. Get a guide and you will enjoy learning from a knowledgeable local. We visited the Jaigarh Fort before heading to Nahargarh Fort for sunset if that helps to plan your day out.

Nahargarh Fort for sunrise

The first time we visited the Nahargarh Fort we arrived at 6 am but found we were locked out. We still enjoyed possibly the most epic view of the entire week while hanging around on the outside walls. The moon was still visible before the sunrise and there was no-one around.

I didn’t expect India to feel exactly as it did during the moments these photos were taken. A vast, barren, peaceful, desert city. Although there were times it was anything but peaceful, like peak hour in a tuk-tuk.

9. Survive the tuk-tuk life

A tuk-tuk is going to be your best mode of transport unless you are the motorbike kind of traveler. Because there were two of us the price of the tuk-tuk worked out fairly cheap. A 20-minute ride can cost you a couple of bucks depending on your negotiating skills. We had a range of drivers, some more aggressive than others.

While we had no crashes we did ram a few people, but bumper cars is the norm in Jaipur so no worries. Aside from the incessant beeping, it was a fun experience competing in the city rally every time we were headed to a new destination. Coming from a country with road rules, beeping at the person in front of you who has nowhere to move may seem unnecessary, loud like it might be a sound you hear in your sleep.

However, enjoy it. This is how it is. Laugh don’t get frustrated and be nice to your driver he most probably knows the spots you won’t find in this blog post or any for that matter.

Ganesh Temple for sunset

The Ganesh Temple, also known as Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple, is a popular religious site located in the heart of the Pink City, Jaipur. The temple is nestled on the Moti Dungri Hill, named after the palace that shares the same hill. Dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the temple is unique as it houses a statue of the deity depicted as a child – a rare representation in Indian temples. Built in the 18th century by Seth Jai Ram Palliwal, the temple is renowned for its intricate carvings and architectural beauty that reflect a blend of Islamic, South Indian, and Rajput styles. The temple holds special significance for the locals and sees a surge of devotees, especially on Wednesdays and during the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival. A visit to the Ganesh Temple is a spiritual experience, offering a serene retreat amidst the bustling city of Jaipur.

Ganesh Temple was lodged at the top of a mountain. A grueling, but short, set of stairs had us breathing hard by the time we made it to the top. We enjoyed views of the city on one side and watched the sun fade behind the mountain on the other.

Aptly named, this is one of the best spots for sunset.
The Sun Temple in Jaipur, also known as the Surya Mandir, is a serene sanctuary dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. Perched on the Galta Hill, this beautiful temple offers panoramic views of the surrounding Aravalli hills and the cityscape of Jaipur. The temple, built in the 18th century, displays an impressive blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, with its ornate carvings and intricate design.

The temple’s tranquil ambiance is magnified during sunrise and sunset, as the Sun God is worshipped during these times. On Sundays, a special ‘aarti’ or prayer ceremony is conducted, attracting numerous devotees. In addition to its spiritual significance, the Sun Temple is a favored spot for bird watchers and nature lovers, as the area around the temple is teeming with native flora and fauna. Visiting the Sun Temple offers a unique blend of spirituality, natural beauty, and architectural marvel, making it a must-see in Jaipur.

The walk up from the entrance archway is owned by monkeys. They are absolutely everywhere and we even managed to find their godfather, The Monkey Man who has apparently been featured in several articles and documentaries. He fed the monkeys by hand and they seemed to trust him.

Along the steep pathway to the sun temple, families were living in tents, offering chapati to support themselves. We then bumped into one of the most epic characters of the trip. He was a yogi, claiming to have the trident naturally printed into his tongue and hand.

After each photo we took he chanted. He asked for money and more or less explained that he makes a living by looking like a genuine boss sitting on top of the hill.

The temple at the top is home to a family who tends to the building. They explained a little about the temple and less than subtly asked for a donation. The sunset was worth the small note I tipped into the box. From the viewing platform beneath the temple, we watched monkeys and goats running rings around the cows below.

The sun slowly cast a shadow on the hundreds of cricket games being played in the streets below. Easily one of the best places to visit in in Jaipur for checking out the sunset.

Play cricket on the street

I’m Australian and have played plenty of backyard cricket. I thought I could swing a bat. I can’t. When I faced a few older guys in a small courtyard I faced an over of balls. I hit none. I was clean bowled on the last ball.

Cricket is played all over Jaipur and luckily I was able to redeem myself in almost two hours of street cricket with a bunch of young kids and teenagers. We played with a real cricket bat but a plastic ball, which I happily smacked all over the neighborhood. They wanted me to keep batting when I got out to see who could be the next to hit the broken chair, that sat limply behind my awkward batting stance.

Playing games whether it be cricket, football or volleyball is a great way to gain some trust and make a friend. One of the fathers invited us in for chai and a snack. He was also a 7ft tall Indian, a gentle giant.

I’m not a tea guy, I’m hardly a coffee guy. But in India, you become a chai guy. For 10rp or 15 cents you can get a small cup of freshly brewed chai tea with milk.

It’s always good to take a break from the hot sun or whatever excuse you need to make up. It became the glue that held our adventures together.

Between morning and lunch, lunch and afternoon, we enjoyed a little chai. The best part about the chai tea is watching it get poured from almost a meter above the pot. A truly skillful art and one of the most theatrical hot drink preparation performances you will witness.

Wander the markets

Jaipur, often referred to as the ‘shopper’s paradise’, hosts a variety of bustling markets that reflect the city’s vibrant culture and rich heritage. Among these, Johari Bazaar is the most famous, known for its splendid collection of gems, precious stones, and exquisite traditional jewelry. Then, there’s Bapu Bazaar, a go-to place for Jaipur’s iconic block-printed textiles, blue pottery, and leather products. For a more eclectic mix of goods, visit Nehru Bazaar, which offers everything from footwear and textiles to perfumes and trinkets.

The Tripolia Bazaar is another must-visit market, particularly for its lac jewelry and locally made carpets and rugs. Monkey Temple for Sunrise

The Monkey Temple, also known as Galta Ji Temple, is a unique pilgrimage site nestled amidst the Aravalli hills on the outskirts of Jaipur. This ancient temple complex is named after the holy sage Galav, who meditated here, but it has earned its popular name due to the large tribe of monkeys that live in the vicinity. The temple, built in pink sandstone, showcases a splendid architectural blend of kunds (water tanks), pavilions, and domes.

The temple is also renowned for its seven sacred water pools, with the Galta Kund being the holiest, believed to never run dry. A visit during Makar Sankranti, a significant Hindu festival, reveals the temple at its vibrant best. Head out on a portrait adventure

I love shooting portraits but even if you are just an observer you are in a land of some unique characters. Taking photos often requires lots of interactions and I get to shake a lot of hands and have some interesting chats.

As always you need to be respectful and try and feel the situation. If you are in someone’s personal space and they are clearly irritated by the camera, apologize and put it away. Most people will be more than happy and give you a nod to take a photo.

Taste-test the Street Food

I’m no foodie and I can’t handle spice. You would think eating in India would be a struggle for me. However, as always I enjoyed the food and found several favorites that I went back to many times.

A samosa set me back 10rp, while Daal and Naan might cost you 60rp-150rp or $1-2. Lassies, a yogurt based drink are served out of terracotta cups, a great refresher. Lime soda is the drink of the town and to be honest wasn’t my favorite but when it’s steaming hot, why not.

Hawa Mahal

The Hawa Mahal, or the ‘Palace of Winds,’ is an iconic landmark that adorns the city of Jaipur with its exceptional architectural splendor. Commissioned by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799, this five-story palace is designed in the shape of Lord Krishna’s crown, as the king was a devoted follower. Constructed from red and pink sandstone, the most striking feature of the Hawa Mahal is its high screen wall filled with nearly a thousand latticed windows or ‘jharokhas,’ which allowed royal women to observe street festivities while staying unseen from the outside.

The architectural style is a blend of Rajput and Islamic design, presenting a magnificent façade that becomes especially captivating at sunrise. Today, the Hawa Mahal is not just an architectural wonder, but it also offers a peek into royal history through its museum. Whether viewed from the street or explored from within, the Hawa Mahal never fails to mesmerize visitors with its grandeur.

Water Palace/Jal Mahal

Situated amidst the serene waters of Man Sagar Lake, the Jal Mahal, also known as the ‘Water Palace,’ is a stunning marvel of Rajput architecture in the heart of Jaipur. Constructed in the 18th century by Maharaja Madho Singh I as a hunting lodge and summer retreat, the palace offers a splendid sight, with its red sandstone façade appearing to float on the lake’s surface. Its unique design consists of five stories, four of which remain underwater when the lake is full, leaving only the topmost level visible.

The palace features intricate carvings and a rooftop garden, demonstrating the architectural brilliance of the period. Although entry into the palace is restricted, visitors can admire its breathtaking beauty from the lake’s shores or opt for a boat ride around it. The Jal Mahal, with its splendid isolation and surrounding natural beauty, offers a tranquil and picturesque spectacle, making it one of Jaipur’s most loved tourist attractions.

City Palace

In the heart of the Pink City, Jaipur, stands the magnificent City Palace, a grand testament to the city’s royal lineage. Constructed in the 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, the palace complex showcases a harmonious blend of Rajput, Mughal, and European architectural styles. The complex houses numerous gardens, courtyards, buildings, and a museum that displays a rich collection of royal costumes, artifacts, and an armory.

Key attractions within the palace include the Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, and Diwan-i-Aam, each bearing unique architectural features and historical significance. JAIPUR ONE-DAY ITINERARY

I think the best way to experience Jaipur in one-day is to start early at sunrise and come home after sunset. It will be a long day but there is just so much to visit. This is my recommended One day Jaipur itinerary:

1. Sunrise: Monkey Temple
2. Morning: Amber Fort in the morning
3. Lunch: Hawa Mahal and Pink City
4. Lunch: Wander the markets near Hawa Mahal for lunch
5. Afternoon: Jaigarh Fort in the afternoon
6. Sunset:  Nahargarh Fort

PAP MOCHANI TEMPLE HIKE

Pap Mochani Temple is a significant religious site located in Pushkar, Rajasthan, India. This temple is dedicated to the goddess Ekadashi Mata, and is believed to provide relief from problems and help followers attain Moksha.

“Pap Mochani” in Sanskrit literally means “the end of sins”. As per local belief, a visit to this temple can absolve a person of their sins. The temple is often visited by people seeking atonement and solace.

Architecturally, the temple is modest but holds an aesthetic appeal with its typical Rajasthani style. The temple stands on a hillock, and reaching it involves a short hike which is an interesting blend of adventure and pilgrimage for visitors. The location of the temple offers panoramic views of Pushkar city and its surrounding landscape, including the beautiful Pushkar Lake.

Pap Mochani Temple is not as widely known as some other places in Pushkar, such as the Brahma Temple or the Pushkar Lake itself, but it is revered by the locals and offers a serene atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the main city.

The temple celebrates a festival called Ekadashi, which happens twice a month, and it attracts many devotees. These days are considered particularly auspicious for visiting the temple.

The short hike to Pap Mochani Temple took only 15 minutes from the base and provided panoramic views of Pushkar and the holy lake. The temple is painted bright pink and you can spot it from just about anywhere in the town.

The priest was at the temple when I arrived about an hour before sunset. He was without a shirt and wearing loose baggy yellow pants and welcomed me with a hello and a smile. Several of his friends were also atop the hill, laying out a blanket on the pillbox. We all sat atop the hill as the sun slowly came down discussing Pushkar, how to hike over the hill to see Ajmer and what drugs Pushkar was famous for.

It was probably the best sunset I had in Pushkar as most nights the haze and clouds drowned out any real color.

Several days later I hiked up the ridge from the far end, way out from the city center. There was no trail and it was very steep in parts.

Cacti and thorny bushes made it a bit of a regrettable experience at times but I don’t call myself an adventure blogger because I sit on pretty beaches sipping cocktails. I made it to the top of the hill after about thirty minutes of scrambling and began walking along the spine of the mountain towards Pap Mochani.

I thought I was on a solo mission until a local man, who looked about 80 years old suddenly appeared with five goats halfway down the hill on a rocky outcrop. I had more company moments later when I made friends with this giant Indian grasshopper bug.

This has transgressed from a short hiking guide rather quickly. The bottom line is you can hike from the stairs easily up to Pap Mochani or you can go the way no-one goes and have a bit of a rough, bloody, sweaty time but make friends with grasshoppers and have an adventure. The choice is yours.

Where to stay in Pushkar

When you are in Pushkar, the main thing to look for in accommodation is located. You want to be near the ghat (the lake). This is where all of the action is and the feature of the city. The accommodation is very cheap in Pushkar and you can get a hostel for $5-10 or a private room for $10-20.

I have recommended two places below. One is a hostel by the popular Zostel chain and the other is a value pick for a private room. Both have a pool, which is nice because it can get very hot and there is no beach or swimming lake nearby.

• Budget recommendation: Zostel Hostel Pushkar – The Zostel Hostel Line has a great reputation in India and the hostel in Pushkar is no different with modern facilities, air-conditioning and of course a swimming pool.
• Value recommendation (Private Room): The Country Side Resort –  This resort has beautiful architecture and amazing facilities with a big swimming pool on the resort grounds for less than $20 per night for a private room.

13 AWESOME THINGS TO DO IN VARANASI

In this blog post, I’ll share with you some of the top things to do in Varanasi. You can organize most of these activities by yourself or you can pre-book some of the tours online in advance such as the Guided City Tour or the Aarti Ceremony & Boat Tour.

Sunrise boat ride

The Holiest river in the world, the Ganges, is a spectacle during the day but a quiet, mystical place at sunrise. Soft pastel colors paint the sky as a few boats glide up and down the river. The cruise will float you past all of the different ghats, passing multiple temples along the way.

Blue Lassi is a hole-in-the-wall cafe, which celebrated its 75th birthday in 2015. It still is and always had been a family venture and the hundreds of photos on the wall are a testament to that.

A lassi is a yogurt drink but they are a little bit fancier at Blue Lassi than your average cup on the street. Handmade by a man sitting on the small porch that overlooks the lane, the lassi’s come in a range of flavors. You can pick a base of peach, mango, banana, pomegranate or several other flavors before picking your toppings. Blue Lassi is one of many possible stops along this popular Varanasi Food Tour.

It’s pretty much the cold rock of Varanasi! My personal recommendations are chocolate/banana/coconut or the coffee. Try and stop at just one! I ended up visiting back several times and it fast became my favorite thing to do in Varanasi.

Take a holy bath in The Ganges

Arguably the holiest river in the world also happens to be one of the dirtiest. The locals of Varanasi are adept to the conditions of the river but many foreigners get sick from the tap water in India let alone the Ganges. During my sunrise boat trip, a dead cow floated past us.

However, if you are brave and want the ultimate souvenir from Varanasi, a blessing from the holiest river in the world, you may just need to hop in. I decided to venture out into the water up to my waste. I didn’t get sick. Win.

Play cricket at the ghats

I’m not great at cricket but any Australian has played enough games in their backyard to know how to hold the bat. So when I saw cricket games each night along the ghats it was only a matter of time before I got involved. We picked teams and had a full-blown match. If you hit the ball into the river with no bounce you are out.

Surprisingly I did okay although the river claimed my scalp a few times. I helped us hit the winning runs in the third game! We won the test match with 2 wins. Don’t be afraid to ask to play but make sure you can at least hit the ball they take it kind of serious in many of the games.

Walk along the ghats

No matter where you stay it isn’t far to get to the ghats and once you are there, there is plenty to look at. You will likely lose track of time as your senses are overwhelmed. There is so much raw action going on down at the ghats along The Ganges River.

Herds of Buffalo are being washed by children in the river, groups of teenage boys are flexing in the river, intense cricket matches are getting loud, people are having their hair cut, boatmen try to coax people on board for a tour, massage and beard trims are left right and center and people are in prayer. If you are into photography you will have a great time snapping some shots along the ghats but be aware taking photos of saadhu men (dressed in orange usually) will cost you a few coins.

Get around by rickshaw

Whether it is auto or a man-powered bicycle, hold on for the ride of your life. I love when I get a savage driver and he just knows nothing of the brake pedal. I usually avoid any trouble on my travels but I was in three crashes in Varanasi. These guys go hard! The horns create a beautiful symphony that I never want to hear again!

Enjoy the rooftop cafe‘s

One of my favorite parts about Varanasi is how all the signs are hand painted onto the walls. I would sometimes follow the signs for what seemed like an hour before finally arriving to a cafe. If you aren’t in a rush pick a random sign and see what rooftop near the ghats you end up on. Grab a drink and watch life below.

 9 AWESOME THINGS TO DO IN PUSHKAR, INDIA

Awesome hikes, festivals, hot air balloons, temples, camel rides, rooftop cafes and visiting the Pushkar Lake are some of the best things to do in Pushkar. In this blog post I will go into detail about all of the top things to do in Pushkar, which was one of my favorite destinations in India.

Pushkar Lake

Pushkar Lake or Pushkar Sarovar is the centerpiece of the quiet town. It’s a sacred lake of the Hindus and was mentioned in history as early as the 4th century BC. What I immediately noticed when I arrived in Pushkar is how peaceful the town was and it was due to the serenity of the lake. Rituals and offerings happen throughout the day at the lake although at night huge Aarti ceremonies take place.

The lake is considered a holy place and there are certain rules for foreigners who are visiting. Like the locals, no shoes are to be worn while walking near the lake or on the bridges that cross the water.

Hike Savitri Temple

The Savitri Temple in Pushkar overlooks the entire town of Pushkar and all the surrounding valleys. The temple can be spotted while at the Pushkar Lake and the beauty is, the temple is only a fifteen-minute walk from the lake. It really is the most accessible and a great way to enjoy the view over the whole of Pushkar.

The walk up from the base takes about fifteen minutes, although you may need a few breaks it is quite a steep incline of stairs. There is also a ropeway which is carriages that take you up the mountain on a cable. I’m not sure how much it costs but unless you are afraid of a short workout and some sweat I suggest the stairs. Keep an eye out for monkeys they were quite aggressive and had me on edge, ready for battle.

The vibrant street food scene in Pushkar is not just about food, but also about immersing oneself in the local way of life, making it a must-try experience for any food enthusiast visiting the town.

I sat down at a number of different cafes in the market area to try a local meal. One of my favorites was the Paneer Paratha on a street not far from Savitri Temple side of town. You can expect to get a meal at a street-side cafe for $2 depending on your order. Hanging out around the markets you will see some awesome characters, meet some cool vendors and it was one of the more chill things to do in Pushkar.

Visiting the many temples in Pushkar provides a deep insight into the town’s spiritual heart and centuries-old religious traditions. The town is home to one of the world’s few Brahma temples, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike for its uniqueness and spiritual significance. The Savitri Temple, perched atop a hill, not only offers a serene prayer environment but also provides a stunning view of the sunset and the surrounding landscape. Other notable temples include the Varaha Temple and Rangji Temple, each with their distinct architectural styles and religious importance. The Varaha Temple was built in the 12th century but was destroyed by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. However, it was rebuilt in the 18th century by Raja Sawai Man Sing II. It’s a fortified temple and is considered to be the most ancient temple in the city.

Visit the nearby town of Merta

Merta City has a population of 40,000 almost four times that of its famous neighbor Pushkar. That’s why it was so surprising to find no information or pictures of the town when I looked online. I decided I would rent a bike and head out on a journey to Merta City and see what the town was like and why hardly any tourists visited.

The drive was on a beautiful road almost the entire way until I reached the outskirts of Merta. The roads were now a rocky bumpy maze with different levels and obstacles laid out before me.

As I reached the town it seemed as if everybody was staring at me. I later found out I was one of a few visitors to Merta City each month. So with my long hair, beard, and bright red bike the attention seemed justified.

Pushkar Camel Fair

The Pushkar Camel Fair begins on October 23rd and attracts a huge crowd. It’s one of the largest camel fairs in the world and involves the buying and selling of livestock. However, the fair has developed into a local celebration and a big tourist attraction.

Competitions such as ‘longest mustache’ and ‘bridal competition’ have become mainstays at the fair. Thousands of tourists flock to Pushkar for the fair so be sure to book accommodation and transport in advance as this is a time of year that Pushkar is bursting at the seams.

Men are selling camels, sheep, goats, and cows while the women are selling textiles, jewelry, and handicrafts. The Pushkar Camel Fair begins with a camel race, music, and songs. If you are in the region at the right time this is one of the most popular things to do in Pushkar.

Where to stay in Pushkar

When you are in Pushkar, the main thing to look for in accommodation is located. You want to be near the ghat (the lake). This is where all of the action is and the feature of the city. The accommodation is very cheap in Pushkar and you can get a hostel for $5-10 or a private room for $10-20.

I have recommended two places below. One is a hostel by the popular Zostel chain and the other is a value pick for a private room. Both have a pool, which is nice because it can get very hot and there is no beach or swimming lake nearby.

• Budget recommendation: Zostel Hostel Pushkar – The Zostel Hostel Line has a great reputation in India and the hostel in Pushkar is no different with modern facilities, air-conditioning and of course a swimming pool.
• Value recommendation (Private Room): The Country Side Resort –  This resort has beautiful architecture and amazing facilities with a big swimming pool on the resort grounds for less than $20 per night for a private room.

Best time to visit Pushkar

The best time to visit Pushkar is dependent on the weather and festivals. On the 23rd of October til the 4th of November, the famous Pushkar Camel Fair is in full swing. It’s one of the most recommended things to do in Pushkar so if you can time your trip for this 10 day period, it’s the time of the year where the town is full of action and good vibes. Therefore to see the town at its finest the best to visit Pushkar is in late October.

Another awesome festival that is run in Pushkar is the Hot Air Ballooning Festival, which runs from 5th Nov to 14th Nov 2016.

If you are considering what the best time to visit Pushkar is and are worried about the weather here’s what you need to know:

• Summer (March – June) Incredibly hot. You will melt in temperatures reaching up to 45 degrees. Nights and mornings will be enjoyable. (When I visited)
• Winter (November – February) 15 degrees during the day and can get down to 5 degrees at night. Many festivals during this period.
• Monsoon Season (July – September) Pushkar doesn’t attract too much rain so monsoon season won’t ruin your trip but you may get a little wet.

The 5 Best Things to do in Agra

WHERE IS MUNNAR

Munnar is nestled amidst the picturesque Western Ghats in the state of Kerala, India. Located at an elevation of approximately 1,600 meters above sea level, Munnar captivates visitors with its breathtaking landscapes, rolling hills, and lush green tea plantations. This idyllic hill station is renowned for its cool climate, serene atmosphere, and abundant natural beauty, making it a haven for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike.

MY EXPERIENCE TREKKING IN MUNNAR

Hiking in India is a thought which had never crossed my adventurous mind. But, here I found myself at 5 am sitting outside my tent at the foot of Phantom Head. Our guide appeared out of the darkness with a torch and we began our hiking experience in Kerala.

The dark morning sky offered little guidance as we followed the beam of our guides torch. Traditional Indian music blasted throughout the neighboring village as a 24-hour celebration continued on into the early hours of the morning. The March weather was mildly chilly but had us throwing off our jackets after the first few steps.

The short hike covers an intense ascent of 400 meters. Beginning at 1500 meters above sea-level the hike reaches an altitude of almost 2000 meters. The air was thin and I was panting throughout the journey. No matter what type of hiker you are, this will be an achievable hike considering it’s short distance.

The climb up the mountain was more of a mission than a scenic route. Every now and again I peered towards the stairs, pinching myself like usual to make sure I knew I wasn’t living in a dream.

After almost forty minutes we reached the summit. A huge cross sat atop the mountain and a herd of cows slept beneath it. We may have woken the cows as we scurried towards the orange haze that was glowing like the end of a campfire. Check out this post for a full two-week India Itinerary full of adventures.

The glow continued to intensify until the sun broke through at around 630am. We explored the ledges, the outcrops and the cliff edges throughout the morning. A huge lake stretches as far as the eyes can see.

The name of the lake translates to “Elephants come down”. Which is precisely what they do at this lake. This is how phenomenal the landscapes and views are in this region and how wild the terrain really is.

I never imagined myself atop a mountain in India but here I was looking out over plains, lakes, forests and villages. That is the beauty of this journey I am on. At the end of each month, I look back on the previous 30 days and can’t believe how I ended up visiting all of these places and having so many amazing experiences.

To reach the beautiful hill station of Munnar, there are several transportation options available:

1. By Air: The nearest airport to Munnar is Cochin International Airport, located approximately 110 kilometers away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Munnar. The scenic drive takes around 3 to 4 hours, offering breathtaking views of the countryside.
2. By Train: The closest railway station to Munnar is Aluva Railway Station, situated about 110 kilometers away. From Aluva, you can hire a cab or take a bus to Munnar. Another option is Ernakulam Junction Railway Station, which is well-connected to major cities in India. From there, you can avail of taxi or bus services to Munnar.
3. By Road: Munnar is well-connected to various cities in Kerala and neighboring states through a network of well-maintained roads. You can drive to Munnar from cities like Kochi, Coimbatore, and Madurai. Private taxis and shared cabs are also available for hire. Additionally, state-run and private buses operate regular services to Munnar from major towns and cities.

It is important to note that the roads leading to Munnar involve steep slopes and hairpin bends, so it is advisable to drive cautiously and be prepared for a slightly challenging but incredibly scenic journey.

The Jaisalmer Fort

Visiting Jaisalmer Fort, an iconic symbol of Jaisalmer, is akin to stepping back in time. Perched on Trikuta Hill, the fort’s majestic yellow sandstone walls glow brilliantly under the sun, earning it the name ‘Sonar Quila’ or the Golden Fort. As you step through the imposing gates, you’re greeted by a labyrinth of narrow, winding lanes lined with intricately carved havelis, temples, and shops. The Private Heritage City Tour is great value, not too expensive and takes you to all of the iconic spots in Jaisalmer including the fort.

A fascinating blend of Rajput and Islamic architectural styles, the fort showcases delicate jharokhas (balconies), stunning jaalis (stone lattices), and ornate chhatris (pavilions). As one of the few ‘living forts’ in the world, it houses nearly a quarter of the city’s population within its ancient walls. Exploring the fort’s rich history, marvelling at its architectural grandeur, and absorbing the vibrant buzz of everyday life within its walls is an experience that encapsulates the true essence of Jaisalmer.

 Jain Temple

Inside the Jaisalmer Fort resides a group of beautiful Jain Temples, a testament to the religious diversity and architectural brilliance of the region. Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, these temples are carved out of the same golden-yellow sandstone as the fort itself, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of intricate carvings, sculptures, and domes. From the main Paraswanath Temple to the smaller, equally stunning Rishabhnath and Sambhavanth Temples, each temple stands as a splendid example of Dilwara style architecture. The walls of the temples are adorned with scenes from Jain mythology, bringing spiritual narratives to life in an incredible display of craftsmanship. Despite being centuries old, the temples remain active places of worship. The tranquility that envelops these sacred spaces, particularly during the morning prayers, offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the fort’s bustling streets, making a visit to these Jain Temples a must-do when exploring Jaisalmer Fort.

Bada Bagh

We rented a motorbike and set off towards Bada Bagh from the city center. It only took us about 15 minutes driving towards the huge wind turbines to find the temple site. Bada Bagh translates to ‘big garden’.

The entrance fee was 100 rupees and not a single tourist was at the site when we arrived in mid-morning. Essentially Bada Bagh is a cemetery. Years ago the founder of Jaisalmer commissioned a dam to create a water tank to be built at the site, which meant it was the only green area in the region at times during the year. It is also the reason why there is a lake next to Bada Bagh, seemingly in the middle of a huge desert. This is how it earnt the name Bada Bagh or ‘Big Garden’.

The Maharajah had a cenotaph built for his father atop the hill and many more cenotaphs more followed after for important figures. A cenotaph is a small temple or tribute statue for a deceased relative. This was one of the most unique things to do in Jaisalmer.

Gadi Sagar Lake

Gadisar Lake is an enchanting man-made reservoir on the outskirts of Jaisalmer. Built by Raja Rawal Jaisal, the first ruler of Jaisalmer, this serene waterbody was once the lifeline of the city, providing much-needed water in the arid desert environment. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and birdwatcher’s paradise, particularly during the winter months when migratory birds flock to the lake. Surrounded by beautiful temples, shrines, and ghats, the lake offers a mesmerizing reflection of the architectural beauty of Jaisalmer.

Temples sit out in the water, almost as if they were floating and the sound of traffic from the city is too far to break the serenity. Visiting Gadi Sagar Lake would be rated as one of the best things to do in Jaisalmer for sunrise in my opinion. Hanging out on the walls of the fort for sunrise could be epic also.

Enjoy a Meal at a Rooftop Cafe

There are many to choose from. In fact, it is harder to find a cafe inside of a building than to enjoy the views from on top. Our accommodation, Hotel Pleasant Haveli, had an awesome setup with comfy, colorful couches and a good array of food. Having dinner at one of the rooftop restaurants is a must-do activity in Jaisalmer.

My other favorite was Cafe the Kaku, which had stunning views and a perfect spot for a drone launch.

Within the fort we tried Gaji’s Restaurant and Kuku Cafe, both had great views and good coffee. The friendly staff is a constant in Jaisalmer so you can expect a friendly smile no matter which rooftop you end up on. Finding a good view each night isn’t a hard feat and one of the fun things to do in Jaisalmer each day.

#7 Camel Safari in the Sand Dunes

While exploring the Golden City it’s likely you will be offered a camel safari in Jaisalmer. It’s the most popular tourist attraction in the western region of Rajasthan. The Sam Sand Dunes are on the outskirts of Jaisalmer in the Desert National Park provides the perfect landscape for slow-paced trekking and escaping the city.

I spent three days and two nights sleeping in the sand dunes under the stars on my camel safari. It was one of the highlights of my three months in India. It was incredibly hot, isolated, and barren. However, this is what made it so epic.

Our guide Sambu started a fire with sticks he would find before each meal. Making chai, chapati, and curry from scratch in the heat of the desert was an amazing feat to watch. This would be my number one recommendation of things to do in Jaisalmer!

There are a few ways to experience a camel safari in Jaisalmer. You can go for a half-day camel trek, overnight trek, or a three-day trek. It really depends on your preference. Kuldhara Village, situated around 18 kilometers west of Jaisalmer, is a fascinating yet eerie site. Established in the 13th century by the Paliwal Brahmins, the village was once a prosperous community. However, it was abruptly abandoned overnight, and today, stands as a ghost village. Legend has it that the entire village was deserted due to the oppressive tax regime and cruelty of the local ruler. The village has been uninhabited since, and locals believe it to be cursed.

As you walk through the empty streets lined with dilapidated homes, you can still sense the echoes of the bustling life that once existed here. The ruins stand as silent witnesses to the village’s mysterious past, adding to the enigmatic allure of Kuldhara. Best Time of Year to Visit Jaisalmer

MY 3-DAY TWO NIGHT JAISALMER CAMEL SAFARI

In this section of the blog post, I’ll share my experience on the 2-night Jaisalmer Camel Safari.

What was included?

• Jeep transfer to the desert starting point
• One camel per person plus two gear/backup camels
• One guide
• All meals and unlimited bottled drinking water
• Accommodation each night (First-night: camp bed with blankets mattress, second-night: soft mat, and blankets directly on the sand dunes)
• Jeep transfer back to hotel
• Use of shower/room before departure from Jaisalmer if not staying that night at the hotel.

Camel Safari in Jaisalmer Day 1:

The jeep picked us up in the morning and drove us through some remote villages before we arrived at a random spot in a field about an hour after we had set off. 5 camels stood waiting all packed and ready to go.

I sat on my camel, ‘Mr. India’, he lurched forward and then rocked back as he rose to all fours and then we took off. Monsoon season had well and truly left a lasting effect on the landscape. It was far greener than I had imagined. It definitely wasn’t endless sand dunes, but as the tour went on in the relentless heat, it would be something I became thankful for.

Riding a camel is slightly less comfortable than riding a horse. You are up high and have great views but my legs and butt began to hurt after an hour of riding each time. Luckily we stopped often.

Both days we stopped at a village. For those new to India, it may be an ‘interesting’ experience. You step off your camel and before you have had a chance to wipe the dust from your face, kids are at your feet, holding your hand and asking for chocolate, pens and your wristwatch.

They see tourists sporadically and often they are given little gifts. There is no right or wrong of what you should or shouldn’t give. My experience in India has been if you give one you end up giving one million and no one is ever satisfied. I do my best to interact with the kids and villagers but ultimately everyone knows we are visiting for half an hour before continuing on our journey.

I tried to take the visits for what they were. A chance to hang out with kids, teenagers and check out a village in the desert. This isn’t a philanthropic visit and despite the pressure placed on you to give gifts, the kids are happy to hang out for 30 minutes with a strange looking guy with a beard. They aren’t materialistic and are great children but are opportunistic, as we all are.

After stopping at the first village we went on our way for another hour. The sun was now at its peak and both Jackie and I are used to the heat. However, it was strong! Sunscreen was a must even for those irresponsible humans like myself who rarely use it.

We found shade in amongst some trees and our guide, Sambu, began unloading all of the gear. Cooking wasn’t just a get fed and get out affair.

Sambu spared no spice and no side when he prepared traditional Indian dishes. First, he would make the fire with sticks he had collected before boiling the chai tea. Then as we enjoyed the chai tea he would begin making rice and Dahl. Then he would make chapati bread from scratch and cook it on the charcoals!

Sambu never let us eat just a little. Like the great Indian hospitality, we have come to know, he force- fed us until we could eat no more. Going hungry isn’t a possibility on this trip. All of the food was vegetarian so it suited almost all diets.

The heat was now at an uncomfortable pressure. With no air conditioning, cold water or refreshing shower in sight, we carried on melting but enjoying the arid landscape. In the Desert National Park, herds of deer roam the mountains and I enjoyed spotting them out in the distance as our camels plodded along.

We arrived at a breathtaking area of sand dunes after trekking through shrubs and sand for most of the first day. I’ve never been slept in sand dunes but couldn’t have imagined anything more awesome. Sambu unloaded the gear and got to work on setting up camp.

Pleasant Haveli has a small hut with army style beds stacked together. We grabbed a couple and set them up in the middle of a sand dune.

As the sun began to set the temperature cooled down and it was the perfect time to read a book, take in the serenity such isolation affords and savor the moment. As darkness fell and the temperature cooled further I watched shooting stars and satellites moving left and right across a blanket of stars.

Camel Safari in Jaisalmer Day 2:

The second morning of our camel safari in Jaisalmer began how our desert morning should. My sleep was rudely interrupted by a pastel sunrise creeping over the dunes.

Sambu had already woken to make chai and look for the camels. Overnight they are let free to graze and they had traveled 3 kilometers away. This meant Sambu started his day with a 6-kilometer round trip just to fetch the camels.

After a breakfast of porridge, toast, papaya, and chai we gathered our gear together and headed out to another desert village. We again skipped between grass, farmland, and sand dunes during the morning journey.

We arrived at the village with no feeling in our butts and had gathered a new team member as a village dog had joined our convoy for several hours. Kids immediately began streaming down the hill and I felt like the pied piper.

Kamali one of the teenagers in the village spoke English and gave us a ramshackle tour of the village. At some points, more than forty children followed us around laughing and cracking jokes about us that we couldn’t understand. Once again we didn’t give any gifts but made the most of visiting the village and the kids seemed to enjoy having some action of an unusual kind in what seems like an isolated place to live.

Lunch on the second day of our camel safari in Jaisalmer was beneath a big old tree next to a lake. The small lake was used by the villagers who came with trucks to pump the water and take it back to the villages for cooking, drinking, and daily use. Shepherds brought hundreds of goats, sheep, cows, and camels to drink from the lake and at times I felt I was sitting in the middle of the great migration.

The second night was spent at another beautiful slate of sand dunes. Sambu felt the need to ask us if the spot was okay, which of course it was. It was amazing!

We played around in the sand dunes until it got dark. This time we had no army-style beds just a thin mattress and slept straight on the sand dunes. It was comfortable enough but a strong wind meant I wiped the sand from my teeth in the morning. It didn’t matter we were in the desert and expected to be sandy.

Morning chai was accompanied by a gaze over the dunes and a complete sense of gratitude. We grabbed everything together and made a one-hour trek before being picked up by the jeep and heading back to Pleasant Haveli Hotel. Our camel safari in Jaisalmer had come to an end.

We were leaving for Jodhpur that night so we didn’t have room to wash up in but the staff gave us an entire room to use for the day so we could shower, relax and recover. It was above and beyond what was necessary or expected and one of the reasons you can count on this group of staff to treat you like a friend throughout your stay.

How are the camels treated?

As far as camel treatment goes they were in good shape and Sambu looked after them. However, there is no denying riding a camel isn’t the best thing for the animal. They are tied up at times and carrying heavy loads in the heat. Overall it was an amazing experience and part of life in the desert for many Rajasthani’s.

Where to stay in Jaisalmer

I stayed at one of the coolest spots of my entire India trip. Pleasant Haveli Hotel has the best views looking straight out over the city towards Jaisalmer Fort from the rooftop cafe.

Breakfast was only a few dollars and a huge spread. Each morning I enjoyed a big feed and a smoothie as I looked out over the city. The rooms and hotel itself were as modern as you will find in Jaisalmer, making our stay cool and comfortable.

SAVITRI TEMPLE IN PUSHKAR

The walk up from the base takes about fifteen minutes, although you may need a few breaks it is quite a steep incline of stairs. There is also a ropeway which is carriages that take you up the mountain on a cable. I’m not sure how much it costs but unless you are afraid of a short workout and some sweat I suggest the stairs. Keep an eye out for monkeys they were quite aggressive and had me on edge, ready for battle.

At the top of the Savitri Temple, you will need to remove your shoes before you can enter the temple. I had made some friends who worked in the India Navy in Goa and watched them give their prayers and perform a short ritual, which began by ringing a bell hung from the ceiling. 

The Savitri Temple in Pushkar is dedicated to the wife of Lord Brahma, Savitri. In 1687 the temple was built on Ratnagiri Hill. You might hear guides refer to the Ratnagiri Hill sunrise/sunset hike. They are referring to the Savitri Temple.

The idols of Savitri and Gayatri sit inside the temple and are the centerpiece of a room you cannot enter but can look into while offering prayer. The idols are incredibly old, dating back to the 7th century.

After the prayer, we took in the views at both the back and the front of the temple as the sun began to set. We got asked to head down before the colors in the sky starting to come through but it was still a great view of the town and surrounding farms.

I suggest heading up an hour before sunset and enjoying the evening sky after visiting the temple. Entry is free but donations are encouraged. 

Where to stay in Pushkar

When you are in Pushkar, the main thing to look for in accommodation is located. You want to be near the ghat (the lake). This is where all of the action is and the feature of the city. The accommodation is very cheap in Pushkar and you can get a hostel for $5-10 or a private room for $10-20.

I have recommended two places below. One is a hostel by the popular Zostel chain and the other is a value pick for a private room. Both have a pool, which is nice because it can get very hot and there is no beach or swimming lake nearby.

• Budget recommendation: Zostel Hostel Pushkar – The Zostel Hostel Line has a great reputation in India and the hostel in Pushkar is no different with modern facilities, air-conditioning and of course a swimming pool.
• Value recommendation (Private Room): The Country Side Resort –  This resort has beautiful architecture and amazing facilities with a big swimming pool on the resort grounds for less than $20 per night for a private room.

I was in Jodhpur for two nights before returning to Jaipur and it was one of the highlights of my three months in India. I tried to fill my two-day Jodhpur Itinerary to the maximum to see as much of the beautiful city as possible.

Best Places to Visit in Jodhpur in Two Days

Mehrangarh Fort

You can wander inside the rooms of the fort, upstairs, into the museums and all the way to where the cannons sit and there is a guided audio tour free of charge. The best spot to view the blue city from the fort was down the far end near the little temple. This must be on your list of places to visit in Jodhpur in two days, it simply cannot be missed even if you don’t venture inside!

Jodhpur Stepwell (Toorji-Ka-Jhalara)

The Jodhpur Stepwell is a must-visit! It might not be in the other guides you’ve read or on the tour brochures but I guarantee you, aside from the blue houses this is the number one tourist attraction in the city. In my opinion anyway and I may be biased.

I went to the Jodhpur Stepwell on both days I was in Jodhpur. It is very close to the Mehrangarh Fort, Clock Tower, and Namaste Caffe. Whenever I drove past I would stop and check to see if any kids were swimming and jumping. If they were I would park my motorbike and jump with them.

Descending layers of stairs wind around the Jodhpur Stepwell leading down to the pool of water. It is said to be built in 600 AD but I couldn’t find a solid source on the date. It was originally a drinking source for the city. The Jodhpur Stepwell is now the unofficial local swimming pool. If you are short for time make sure you add this to your list of places to visit in Jodhpur in two days, you won’t regret it.

Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) & Sardar Market

The clock tower is a great central meeting point, where vendors gather to trade and sell fruits, vegetables and arts and crafts. It is the nucleus of the Sardar Market where you can find textiles, gems, and souvenirs. It is also the best spot to head if you want to try two iconic foods of Jodhpur, which I will list below.

Try a Mishrilal Lassi

This a unique Lassi and a unique experience. When you order your Lassi for 30 rupees (50 cents) you head to the crowded dining room and take a seat if you can find one. Then a server comes around the room with a drinks holder carrying 10 Lassi’s and hands them out to those who put their hand up.

The customers then pass around a bucket of ice, which you scoop into your Lassi when it comes your way. It’s quite an odd way of delivering drinks and not necessarily the most efficient or orderly but … India.

The Lassi isn’t like others I’ve had and I tried many during my three months in India. It had a distinctive lemon-lime taste. It was almost like a key-lime Lassi. Either way, it has stood the test of time and proved a winner with the locals. There aren’t many cafes that offer one kind of drink or a single flavor. Just ask for your Lassi, find a seat and enjoy.

Jaswant Thada

Just like the cemetery of Bada Bagh in Jaisalmer, Jaswant Thada is a cenotaph, a particularly huge one. It was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh in 1899 in memory of his father. What is so amazing about the structure it is that it’s made from thin layers of marble, which produce a soft glow in the sunlight.

Jaswant Thada is impressive from close up but it wasn’t until I flew the drone that I got to appreciate the symmetry of the garden, the huge lake and how the city begins at the end of the mountains nearby. If you love architecture this should be at the top of the list of places to visit in Jodhpur in two days.

Exploring the blue houses of the blue city

While some may expect the blue city to be entirely blue it isn’t the case. However, the theme throughout the city is blue, with many houses continuing the old age tradition with blue paint or a blue roof. From the Mehrangarh Fort, you get a clear idea of how blue the city is.

I first visited the Fort and then after surveying the city decided that the suburb of Chandpole would be a good area to explore on the fort in search of some local street life with shades of blue.

I had a relaxing afternoon wandering the alleys, getting slightly lost in Chandpole. I concluded that finding an entire street covered in blue was either impossible or a local secret. I did, however, find blue spatterings throughout Chandpole. Often several houses in a row, an alley or a large building were painted a light shade of blue.

Near Chandpole you can also enter the Mehrangarh Fort from the back side. I didn’t want to enter or pay again so I just climbed up towards the entrance and managed to sneak up a wall for a better view of Chandpole from above.

There may be a better area to view the blue houses of Jodhpur but I can personally guarantee Chandpole as a good spot for blue street photography.

Umaid Bhawan Royal Palace

The palace was formerly known as Chittar Palace because the origin of the stones was Chittar Hill and construction finished in 1943.

The story regarding the palace was actually quite interesting. It wasn’t built for any other reason than to provide employment to thousands of people during a time of famine. Much like a stimulus package during a recession. The Palace has 347 rooms, houses the Jodhpur Royal Family and the museum.

It’s one of the only places in the world where you can live in a royal palace while the royal family is also residing in the palace. Although you are unlikely to bump into a royal on your way to breakfast the experience of living in a room and on the grounds that were originally designed for royalty is a unique opportunity. So unique in the fact that Umaid Bhawan was awarded the World’s Best Hotel by TripAdvisor in the category of Traveller’s Choice.

My favorite part about the museum was the car collection of the former king out the front of the Palace. He had everything from a Rolls Royce to a Morris Minor in a range of quirky colors.

• Be sure to try a Kesar ice-cream near the entrance. Kesar means saffron and this ice cream was like no flavor I had tasted before. For 30 rupees (50 cents), you can’t really go wrong.

Mahadev Temple

This spot is so hard to find, even the tuk-tuk drivers had no idea what I meant. From the fort and from Namaste Caffe I could see a tall thin rock formation nearly 100m tall. On top, it had a temple or a shrine. I was curious and wanted to find it.

At Umaid Bhawan with the help of a group of ten friendly drivers, we google imaged and google mapped without much luck. One driver thought he knew what I was on about and we took off with our fingers crossed but not full of hope when I thought he headed in the wrong direction.

Turned out I was the only one who was wrong as he led us straight to what he called Mahadev Temple, which was not on google maps as far as I could see. We removed our shoes and walked past the priest on the ground floor.

Our driver decided to accompany us and was a really cool guy. Up a metal ladder and some concrete foundation and we made it to the top of the temple. Awesome views and a good chat with Ramdev our driver made it well worth the 100 rupee diversion from Umaid Bhawan.

Mehrangarh Viewpoint

Firstly if anyone knows the official name of this small trail please let me know. I’ve tried to find it to no avail. About a five minutes walk from Mehrangarh Fort is a small trail of stairs leading to a temple and a collection of phone towers. At the top, security or even what seemed like a family living at the top smiled and waved us in.

We continued to explore the rocks and the walls of the fort which spans all the way to this viewpoint and much further into the distance. This is a great spot for sunset with epic views of the fort and Rao Jodha park where people are zip-lining.

These are my top picks for the best places to visit in Jodhpur in two days. However, there are a number of other temples and museums you might be interested in add to your two-day Jodhpur itinerary. Definitely delve further if you have the time. I only had a couple of days before heading back to Jaipur at the end of my India road trip.

Where to stay in Jodhpur

I stayed at Namaste Caffe, which I randomly picked when I was scrolling on Booking.com and it turned out to be a great choice. The main part I loved about Namaste Caffe was that it had the most amazing view from the rooftop restaurant. I found it hard to believe I was eating a huge breakfast for under $3 while looking out over the city and directly up at Mehrangarh Fort, which is the focal attraction of Jodhpur.

The cafe offers some local dishes but I ate mostly western plates during my stay. The Namaste Special for breakfast was my go-to and such a good way to start the day. A Nutella crepe, yogurt muesli bowl, scrambled eggs and french toast all for 180 rupees or $3 USD. The cheap price of the room will surprise you despite having such an epic view!

I walked the streets, wandered down the alleys, clambered up mountains and trudged through the mud to meet a number of the characters I was fortunate enough to photograph. Often the photograph that resonates with me the most from a specific trip is the photo with a little story behind it.

This was a journey to capture the human nature of Kerala. I wanted to show the essence of a Keralite through my photography. The photos were all taken without any set-up, posing or preparation as I wanted to capture the true feeling of Kerala.

Often the photograph that resonates with me the most from a specific trip is the photo with a story behind it. Many of these photos have a little story behind them, often providing a snippet into someone’s life. I will share some of the stories from these moments below the photographs.

I visited a nature park which offered elephant rides to tourists and tours of the local plants, herbs, and spices in the park. While riding animals isn’t something I am interested in being a part of, it is a job and a way of life for hundreds of elephant owners and trainers across India. This trainer stood by his elephants while posing and resting his head on theirs throughout the half-hour I was with him. They stood together silently in a moment of rest.

Exploring around the streets of Kochi was a colorful experience full of action. When I first met this young boy in his Barcelona jersey and underpants, he shouted at me to get my attention but then he got shy and ran back to the wall of his house.

He was still smiling and I shot a few photos as he clutched the hand of his sister. I tried to give him a high-five but despite a nod from his mom, he was too scared. I said goodbye and headed down the alley but after a few seconds, he shouted at me again from the end of the alley almost enticing me to stick around. I crouched down and extended my hand for a high five from the end of the alley.

He took a few tentative steps, looked back at his mother and then he committed, sprinting down give me a high five and skipped back to his mom. These pictures are just snapshots of small moments in the streets and I hope they give you a glimpse into what life is like in India.

Walking through the streets of Fort Cochin, it is impossible not to pass some wise characters. When I headed over to chat with an old man I had no idea I was about to the subject of his art. He asked me to take a photo of him and his friend before telling me to give him a pen and paper. I obliged and then he ordered me to stare at the purple shutter right in front of me. Not quite sure what was going I did so.

Three minutes passed and my friend and I were laughing and talking about how ridiculous I look, staring at a wall only a foot away from my nose. At one stage his friend even told me to shut up for two minutes! His drawing is actually quite good but he assured me if he had his better glasses the drawing would have been much better.

Taking photos of women in Kerala, India requires a little more tact than shooting men. Kerala is home to many different religions who live harmoniously. With each religion comes different customs and often different levels of enthusiasm and extroversion.

Women with small children and babies often ask to have their photo taken with their young one. Pride pours out of their smiles in these photos.

A local fish market in Fort Cochin is full of hard work, smells of fish and sweat and you can feel the hustle. The energy within the market was infectious and the groups of men working together were sharing jokes and had a real zest for life.

I stumbled upon a group of kids playing soccer in the street with a ball made from tape. I joined them in the hot afternoon sun for a while before they decided to show me their talents. The boys seemed to want to one-up each other for the camera and were skidding on the bikes around the corners before they moved on to the acrobatics show where everyone was all about the cartwheels!

The colors of the Indian flag seemed to creep into a lot of the portraits I took. I’m not sure if these color choices were intentional or luck. If you are wondering why on earth anyone would dye their hair orange, I was told it was to hide the grey hairs.

At the Chinese fishing nets, I found the most interesting things going on were behind the nets. Stalls selling fish, chai tea and ornaments were manned by some of the most interesting characters I saw throughout the entire trip.

People are more affectionate in India, especially the men. It isn’t uncommon to see two men holding hands walking down the street or with their arms around each other. Many times when I was about to take a photo someone would rush off to grab their best mate and it made the moment much more special. I got to see a lifetime bond in so many situations.

The Chinese fishing nets are something I had never seen before. Huge contraptions that haul in big nets multiple times a day, hopefully, full of fish. The men working these nets sit in fishing huts in between hauls hoping their next catch will be bigger than the last.

Here are the final portraits I took while in Kerala. It truly is one of the most vibrant places with such a rich history and culture.
