There are two alumnae groups working to right some of the wrongs you noted. One group, the Cleveland Commission for Wells, has hired a law firm to see if we can stop the closure – at least the permanent part – by taking this year “off” to get the finances and accreditation under control. It’s unclear why so many things went wrong, but we are digging into as much as we can to see what we can fix. We don’t want to see the town, the faculty and staff, the students, and us, permanently screwed because we had some ill-prepared people involved in running our beloved Wells for ten years.

Your report didn’t mention that Gibraltar never moved into the gorgeous President’s home, just off campus, but lived in Syracuse with his wife. He’s been an adjunct professor at Syracuse University for a while and one wonders how he could do that while being a full time college president. He allowed his stepson (this is rumor, but supposedly a relative at any rate) to live in the President’s house, where he lived with feral cats who destroyed the place. The destruction is supposed to have been repaired, but I hope that came out of Gibraltar’s pocket and not out of any Wells College funds.

(Classes 1934 and 1964). We got good educations and made lifelong friendships. I was asked to contribute to the class gift for my 60th reunion this year. I did. And some years ago I gave an Elshemius painting for the college’s collection of his works. I never got an acknowledgment. The sloppy ending of Wells leaves a bitter taste to so many of us who loved by our Alma Mater.

The behavior of the Board of Trustees and college administration was completely opaque and misleading to faculty, staff, students, and the town of Aurora. Big questions remain about the millions in dollars of assets of the college. And the Alumnae Association had the nerve to send out 2 fund raising appeals “to help the students find new schools.” One Alumnae Assn email FAQ said that the NYS Attorney General would be in charge of deciding the disposition of 2 iconic Wells Fargo stage coaches and the statue of Minerva watching over the entrance to Main Bldg. Why would the NYS AG be involved in selling off assets? Is the closure actually a bankruptcy process?

I am an alumna (class of 1961) and it is heartbreaking and disturbing after its 156 year history.

How is it that the president of wells received high bonuses ($80000) when the college wad in such bad financial shape? Why aren’t the trustees accountable for their poor decisions? Rumors about Wells closing were going on well before COVID. This effect will be far reaching as the little town Wells is situated only has the college for revenue.
