And honestly, they have a point:
* way too expensive
* the lessening worth of a liberal arts degree in the real world
* they are sick of school and don’t like it
* they are more anxious to make money and get to work and feel like college is an expensive waste of time
* they feel like universities do not want them, seeing them only as sexual predators or cash cows
* they do not want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and go into debt to sit in extended high school-like classes that teach DEI and label them as “bad”. At best, this feels like a waste of time. At worst, it feels like a lie.
* men vastly prefer to enroll in trade school and military over women. These are equally good options.
* men prefer to take a ‘gap year’ and a breather from the terrible k-12 GirlPower experience that passes as public school education, and just go work at OfficeDepot.

My feedback as a mom of boys applying to colleges (or not). It would be nice if colleges might address some of these issues. But no one asked, preferring to use “Covid” as an excuse for not doing research into the real issues.

The only national data presented, from the National Center for Education Statistics, points in the opposite direction of the headline and thesis statement. Both public and private four-year universities for the period cited (2014-2018) were 4% more likely to accept women than men.

The information advancing the thesis that it is harder to get into schools for women than men was mostly from single-school anecdotes, and even those anecdotes when queried further in some cases (Brandeis, William&Mary) describe practices that are no longer followed. The closest to a systematic counterpoint to the 4% female advantage was a non-systematic review of a handful of colleges which showed a 2% male advantage (if these schools were included in the NCES study, it means they were overwhelmed by greater than 4% female advantages in other schools).

Further, the article acknowledges that gender-based discrimination does happen in favor of women for STEM fields. No doubt this contributes at least in part to the overall 4% advantage women have in acceptance rates. It would be interesting to learn whether and to what extent corresponding male-preferencing actions are taken for men who express an interest in historically female-dominated majors like Psychology or English. I had hoped this article would throw some light on that.

This is just a correction of the system to address a previous over-correction. This will bring us closer to equal rights. Laws need to be adjusted from time to time to better solve the problems they were meant to address , and the next step forwards is to make the laws that address the problems behind some groups being under represented , rather than applying bandages to the problem and hoping the causes will somehow go away by themselves.

And it is a fact white women take the majority of the spots in ths unfair fight against blacks. HBCU welcomes white people, but their stigmas about black people and thinking it would be “less” of an education keeps them from applying. Actually HBCU’s offer the same level if not higher type of education as the Ivy leaugue schools.
White people have to gett over this thing that they are so superior than other races. The way that world is going, we are going to see the clocks go back instead of moving forward. It’s like white people don’t want to see no progress but them. To keep “control” of the world like it was not so long ago. Most of the crimes that are committed are done by our white counterparts, but they have generational wealth or generational support from the very people who look like them. Until the day we can erriticate racism and reverse racism AA for people who qualify. Thats just like telling someone that they cant go to college because the ADA took the law back about diversity. Oh then they[white men] would have a fit. Eerything is based on keeping things white. We need white people to stand up for whats right and not worry about their social circles. People talking behind their back anyway.

It is very important to note that race-based affirmative action cannot be used in a reparative context. The only recognized compelling interest for an institution to use race-based affirmative action is to realize the benefits of diversity, per Grutter v. Bollinger and every Supreme Court decision that has upheld affirmative action.

I think there should be a note around Shayna Medley’s comments acknowledging this.
