This is just a quick observation about your news story regarding the FAFSA mess and a little constructive criticism.

The story’s headline calls for the “fiasco” to be “fixed immediately,” but your story laments the fact that a quick fix is very unlikely, which means that it’s “game over” already.

Perhaps the story could’ve included an anecdote or two, if such anecdotes exist, about what individual colleges and college officials are doing on their own campuses to help their student prospects estimate the amount of aid that may be available to them so as to sustain students’ interest in applying and enrolling. Which is a longer Bruce way of saying that perhaps your story could’ve indicated more clearly what college officials, counselors, parents, and students can be doing while everyone awaits the fix that is necessary.

Painless process and never had a crash. Are we beating up on the DOE too much with this reporting, and not giving them some credit for trying hard to simplify the FAFSA. Obviously there are going to be some glitches, but my experience has been opposite of recent reporting. Normally I’m the first one to deride bureaucratic headaches, but the alarm in this case seems a little overblown. Caveat, I’m a high wage earner, so my level of detail and verification may not be what other families are experiencing.
